Emerald Fennell describes Saltburn as a story about desire that cannot be satisfied—and about people who can attract and repel us at once. The title’s Cruel Intentions comparison is a useful way into its erotic charge, but the available interview coverage does not establish exactly what Fennell said about that film or whether it influenced hers.

What does Fennell say Saltburn is about?

Fennell has described the film’s central force as insatiable desire and its consequences. “The nature of this movie is that it is complicated, because it is about desire, and it is about a kind of desire that is completely insatiable, and what that does to you,” she told GMA News Online.

In that interview, she also spoke about people being inconsistent: they can be drawn to things they dislike and repelled by things they might expect to want. Oliver Quick, an Oxford student drawn into Felix Catton’s privileged world, is driven by love and desire as he tries to satisfy an itch that cannot be scratched. Fennell connects the film’s looking-without-touching quality to writing during COVID-19, when people often encountered one another through screens.

That tension makes desire more than a romance or a straightforward sexual impulse. It can involve longing, proximity, fantasy and the pursuit of something that remains out of reach.

Why are the characters both appealing and repellent?

Fennell has said she wants her work to feel human and complicated rather than easy to label. In a TIME interview published November 22, 2023, she said: “I don’t think anything is effective if you don’t both like and dislike people in equal measure; that’s what the people in our lives are like.”

She describes the Cattons as cruel and capricious, but still human. That combination lets attraction and revulsion occupy the same space: a character can be compelling without being admirable, and a scene can be seductive without becoming comfortable. Fennell has said she is interested in desire that turns transgressive and binds attraction to revulsion.

This is not a request to settle on one moral response. Fennell says she does not believe in taking sides or imposing moral judgment, and the PerthNow coverage reports her interest in how audiences respond rather than in prescribing one answer about the film’s view of aristocracy or middle-class striving.

What does the *Cruel Intentions* comparison establish?

The comparison appears in the title’s framing and in a RogerEbert.com search result that connects Saltburn with sex and desire. It suggests an angle for thinking about eroticized manipulation and attraction, but the retrieved material does not establish a precise statement from Fennell about Cruel Intentions. It also does not support claiming that the earlier film directly influenced Saltburn.

So the careful answer to the “hotness” question is about Fennell’s documented approach to Saltburn: she is interested in desire that unsettles, and in the discomfort of being drawn toward people or moments one may also find disturbing. The comparison should remain a framing device, not be presented as her confirmed explanation of the film.

What is Saltburn?

Saltburn is Fennell’s 2023 comedy, drama and thriller, with an approximate runtime of 131 minutes, according to the BBFC’s UK classification record. Its synopsis follows Oxford student Oliver Quick as he enters the world of Felix Catton and Felix’s family. The BBFC record lists strong sex, nudity, sexual threat, drug misuse and very strong language. That is UK guidance, not a universal classification for every territory.

How does Fennell read the ending?

Fennell describes the final dance as holding two ideas together: joyful abandon and desecration, alongside a sense of ownership. Her account reflects the same unsettled mixture she identifies elsewhere in the film; it is her interpretation, not a definitive instruction for every viewer.

Fennell has also said, “I don’t set out to be provocative.” The comment, in TIME’s interview, sits alongside her interest in making something true about desire—even when that truth produces discomfort. Provocation, in this account, is not the goal in itself; the complicated response is part of what the story explores.
