Salman Rushdie’s publicly documented relationship history is best understood as a timeline of five marriages, not a complete list of every person he may have dated. He married Padma Lakshmi in 2004; they divorced in 2007. He met poet and artist Rachel Eliza Griffiths in 2017, and they married in September 2021. The available sources support those milestones, while personal accounts of the Lakshmi marriage offer different perspectives rather than one definitive explanation for its end.
Who has Salman Rushdie been married to?
Cambridge University Press’s biographical chronology records five marriages: to Clarissa Luard, Marianne Wiggins, Elizabeth West, Padma Lakshmi and Rachel Eliza Griffiths. It names Luard and Rushdie’s son, Zafar; records his marriage to Wiggins in 1988; and notes that West and Rushdie married in 1997, had a son, Milan, and divorced in 2003. The chronology preview does not provide a precise marriage date for Luard or fuller relationship details for the Luard and Wiggins marriages, so those milestones should not be embellished.
The Cambridge chronology ends in 2005, so it does not cover the later marriage to Griffiths. Rushdie described Griffiths as his fifth wife in a 2024 interview with Le Monde; Griffiths gave their exact wedding date in a 2024 first-person account.
Salman Rushdie and Padma Lakshmi: meeting, marriage and divorce
They met in 1999 and married in 2004
Rushdie and Lakshmi met in Manhattan at a Talk magazine launch party in 1999, according to The Guardian’s 2007 report. Cambridge University Press’s chronology records their marriage in April 2004. The Guardian reported that their relationship began after Rushdie’s separation from Elizabeth West.

The divorce was announced in 2007
In July 2007, after three years of marriage, the couple were divorcing. The Guardian quoted Rushdie’s spokeswoman, Jin Auh, as saying that he “has agreed to divorce his wife, Padma Lakshmi, because of her desire to end their marriage”. That was the public explanation attributed to his spokeswoman at the time; it is not a complete account of the private relationship or a definitive judgment about why the marriage ended.
Later accounts are personal perspectives
In a 2021 Guardian interview, Rushdie discussed how he had hurt West, as recounted in his memoir, and said he and Lakshmi had since patched things up and were in touch. The interview also noted that both he and Lakshmi wrote critically about their relationship in their memoirs. Those retrospective accounts reflect each writer’s perspective; they do not establish a single, independently verified explanation for the divorce.

Rachel Eliza Griffiths: meeting in 2017 and marriage in 2021
The Associated Press reported that Rushdie and Griffiths met at a PEN America event in May 2017. Rushdie also said in his 2024 Le Monde interview that he met “Eliza” in 2017. He recalled, “At the moment in which I met Eliza, I was actively not looking for love.”
Griffiths, a poet and artist, wrote that they married on 24 September 2021. In her 2024 Guardian essay, she said Rushdie had been attacked in August 2022 when they had been married for 11 months. She described their relationship this way: “For five years, he and I had privately built a home for each other.” That is Griffiths’s personal description of their years together, not a separate public record of a formal relationship start date.
What the public record does—and does not—show
The documented chronology gives readers a clear outline of Rushdie’s marriages, especially the dates of his relationships with Lakshmi and Griffiths. It does not establish an exhaustive inventory of his dating life. For the Lakshmi marriage, the contemporaneous 2007 divorce announcement and the couple’s later memoirs are distinct kinds of evidence: the announcement records what his spokeswoman said at the time, while the memoirs offer later personal recollections.
Readers seeking those perspectives can turn to Lakshmi’s Love, Loss, and What We Ate, Rushdie’s Joseph Anton: A Memoir, and Griffiths’s The Flower Bearers. These works provide the authors’ own accounts, not a neutral third-party adjudication of their relationships.
