The film’s action can be forceful; its weakness is that escalating violence too often substitutes for the character development and dramatic payoff that might make the spectacle resonate. That is an evaluation of the film’s approach, not a claim that every viewer will find it too long or too violent.
What is Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire?
Directed by Prashanth Neel and starring Prabhas, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire is a 2023 Telugu-language action, mystery-and-thriller, and drama film. Hombale Films’ official film page identifies Neel as director and lists Prabhas among the cast. Rotten Tomatoes lists its theatrical release date as December 21, 2023 and its runtime as 2h 52m. Does the runtime make it overlong?
At nearly three hours, the film asks viewers to spend a substantial amount of time in its world. Length alone does not make a movie overlong; the question is whether the time spent establishing its conflicts and relationships earns the later action. Here, the accumulation of setup can make the dramatic momentum feel slower than the forceful set pieces promise. The issue is not simply that the film runs 2h 52m, but that stretches of worldbuilding and anticipation do not always deepen the central relationships enough to justify their duration.
That uneven balance also affects the action. When a sequence changes what the characters risk or understand about one another, spectacle has a dramatic purpose. When escalation is the main event, the film can feel as if it is reaching for a bigger shock rather than a more consequential turn. Viewers drawn to expansive buildup may find that scale part of the appeal; those looking for tightly paced action drama may find the payoff less consistent.

Is Salaar more action or drama?
Prashanth Neel has described the story as centered on Deva and Vardha, saying, “This story is all about Deva and Vardha, Salaar is a drama at its core.” He also defended the violence comparatively: “I’ve seen Telugu cinema for years now and the violence in my film is pale compared to that.” These are Neel’s stated intentions, reported by NDTV in January 2024, rather than a definitive measure of how the film plays for every viewer.
The drama is most persuasive when the film’s action gives weight to the bond and conflict between its central figures. Yet the sheer scale of the world and the repeated intensification of violence can pull focus away from that relationship. The result is an action film with dramatic ambitions, not a drama that consistently makes every violent set piece feel necessary.

How violent is it?
The violence is emphatic and stylized, and its intensity may be off-putting for some viewers. The Indian Express reported that the film received an A certificate in India in December 2023; that is a historical classification for India, not a universal rating or a current classification for other territories. The critical question is whether the violence adds character or raises the stakes. At its best, brutality makes the world feel dangerous and gives confrontations physical consequence. At its most excessive, another escalation can register as provocation without making the characters’ choices clearer. The film’s shock tactics are therefore a matter of effect as much as quantity: some viewers will find the force of the action satisfying, while others may feel that it overwhelms the drama.

What do other critics emphasize?
The displayed responses on Rotten Tomatoes offer contrasting points rather than a definitive consensus. One critic’s summary praises satisfying action and a solid story that occasionally surprises, while warning that the violence may be off-putting. Another says that although Prabhas and Prithviraj lead the film, the side characters receive comparable depth. Those observations point to genuine strengths—action and ensemble writing—but do not erase the pacing and tonal concerns above, or establish how most viewers will respond.

It is most likely to satisfy viewers who want a large-scale action film, enjoy extended buildup, and are comfortable with stylized violence. Viewers who prioritize brisk pacing, restrained brutality, or a drama that consistently develops its central relationship may find the long runtime harder to justify. The film’s merits and drawbacks sit close together: spectacle gives it momentum, but spectacle alone cannot make every escalation dramatically meaningful.
