Sai Paranjpye’s A Patchwork Quilt: A Collage of My Creative Life is a 2020 memoir built from stories about making films, theatre and radio—and from the optimism she says has stayed with her since childhood. It grew from her Marathi autobiography, but Paranjpye rewrote parts of it rather than translating it sentence by sentence.

What is A Patchwork Quilt about?

Published by HarperCollins India in 2020, A Patchwork Quilt: A Collage of My Creative Life gathers memories from Paranjpye’s career across radio, theatre, television and cinema. Google Books lists the edition as 437 pages, ISBN 9789390327485. The structure is deliberately more like a collection of connected pieces than a straight march through a life: readers can dip into anecdotes and recollections from different stages of her creative work.

Among the films discussed are Sparsh, Chashme Buddoor and Katha. In her interview with Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath, Paranjpye spoke about the demanding production history of Sparsh and memories associated with the other films. A sample published by HarperCollins India focuses on Chashme Buddoor, including the Chamko soap demonstration scene and stories about performers Saeed Jaffrey and Farooq Shaikh. That excerpt offers a glimpse of the book’s scene-based storytelling, though it is a selected publisher sample rather than an independent assessment of the whole memoir.

Why is the English book not a literal translation?

The English memoir grew out of Paranjpye’s Marathi autobiography, Saya: Majha Kalapravas, which she wrote in 2016. She chose to produce the English book herself rather than hand it to a professional translator. As she told Ramnath, “The sensibility and sensitivity in both languages are quite different.” She therefore rewrote several chapters instead of following the Marathi text sentence by sentence.

The English edition also develops material in new directions. Paranjpye said she expanded the account of her mother, Shakuntala Paranjpye, and added a story about a trip to France and Switzerland in the 1970s, when she met her father, Russian sculptor Youra Sleptzoff, in Switzerland. The result is best understood as a substantially reworked companion to the Marathi autobiography, not a direct translation.

What does “I guess I was born with a grin” mean?

The title phrase comes from Paranjpye’s own description of her enduring humour and optimistic temperament. In the 2020 Scroll interview, she connected that outlook to reading Eleanor H. Porter’s Pollyanna books as a child while her family was in Australia. “I have this attitude or aptitude to look on the bright side,” she said. Her grin is not a claim that life was without difficulty; it is her way of describing the disposition with which she has approached it.

The book’s quilt metaphor fits that mix of recollection and tone. In the publisher’s excerpt, Paranjpye writes, “I do hope that this quilt can provide some warmth and comfort to those it reaches.” The emphasis is on assembling vivid pieces of a creative life, with humour as a recurring thread.

How personal is the memoir?

Paranjpye’s stated purpose was to record her creative journey, and the book’s focus on productions and collaborators gives readers detail about the work. It is less revealing in some personal dimensions. In a 2021 review for The Indian Express, Rita Kothari judged that Paranjpye kept personal details “curated” and that the memoir offered limited interiority. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus, but it identifies a useful expectation: readers looking primarily for intimate confession may find the account more attentive to creative process and professional memory.

How does Paranjpye address the label “woman director”?

Paranjpye has objected to being repeatedly reduced to the label “woman director.” As quoted by Kothari, she said: “Wherever I go I am never allowed to forget that I am a woman filmmaker. This can get quite exasperating….To the eternal question that I am plagued with — what is the main disadvantage of being a woman director — my answer is: being endlessly harangued with this very question.” The frustration is part of the memoir’s professional context: she wants the work and its circumstances to be seen without every discussion returning to gender as a defining category.
