Sacred Games was more than Netflix’s first original series from India. It was a strategic test: could a Hindi-English crime saga rooted in Mumbai become premium television for audiences around the world? Netflix’s answer was to preserve the story’s cultural specificity, then add global distribution, subtitles, dubbing and a recognizable serialized format.
The bet behind Sacred Games
Netflix announced Sacred Games on June 6, 2016, calling it the company’s first original series from India. Based on Vikram Chandra’s novel and produced with Phantom Films, the series was planned for Netflix members in more than 190 countries. Netflix’s announcement described a story of organized crime, corruption, politics and espionage beneath Mumbai’s economic rise.

The strategic question was not simply whether Indians would watch an Indian crime drama. Netflix wanted to know whether a story deeply tied to Mumbai, Indian political history and Hindi-English speech could travel without being culturally neutralized. Erik Barmack, then a Netflix executive, told Scroll.in that the aim was to treat the show as a local production while making it a global story. The May 2018 interview captures the strategy as Netflix presented it at the time.
Why this story made sense as a flagship
A substantial source world
Chandra’s acclaimed 2006 novel supplied a large narrative architecture rather than a single, self-contained film plot. Crime, political conspiracy, religious conflict, espionage and an apocalyptic countdown offered material for serialized television and entry points for viewers unfamiliar with India.

Mumbai as more than scenery
The city is part of the show’s argument. Its criminal networks, political institutions, religious tensions and changing economy shape the characters and the plot. That specificity was an export feature, not an obstacle Netflix intended to remove.
Genre that could travel
Netflix internally positioned the project alongside complicated, genre-driven series such as Breaking Bad, Peaky Blinders and Narcos. That comparison records Netflix’s positioning, not an objective equivalence in quality or format. The useful point is that crime-thriller conventions gave international viewers a familiar way into an unfamiliar social and historical setting.
Recognized Indian talent
Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane brought established reputations from Indian cinema and international festival circuits. The cast included widely respected Indian performers. Netflix was buying creative credibility as well as an adaptation.

- Five years after the release of Enter the Dragon and the death of its star Bruce Lee, director Robert Clouse was recruited by Golden Harvest to complete Lee's last, unfinished masterwork, only a third of which was filmed before he died: Game of Death. The result is an exciting rollercoaster ride that blends Lee's martial arts mastery with Clouse's eye for nail-biting suspense.
How “local” became a global package
Netflix’s formula had four connected parts:
- Authentic material: Indian settings, performers, political references and Hindi-English dialogue.
- Premium execution: cinematic production, complex plotting and long-form character arcs.
- Worldwide release: Netflix said the series would be distributed to members internationally rather than sold territory by territory.
- Localization infrastructure: Barmack told Scroll.in that the show was planned for presentation in more than 20 languages, including subtitles and dubbing, with viewing in markets such as the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
“Global appeal” therefore did not mean turning the show into English-language television or deleting its Indian references. It meant using genre, translation and Netflix’s international platform to make local specificity discoverable.
The talent proposition
Sacred Games also functioned as a recruitment pitch. Netflix could offer Indian directors, writers and actors:
- distribution beyond India;
- a premium serialized format that cinema could not always accommodate;
- less dependence on opening-weekend theatrical revenue;
- the possibility of reaching audiences outside their usual markets; and
- an alternative route for ambitious projects that might not fit conventional television or film economics.
Scroll.in reported that Netflix emphasized international exposure while competing for Indian filmmaking talent. That is an attributed strategic claim, not independently audited evidence that Netflix caused a particular migration of talent.

It was a portfolio, not a one-show gamble
Netflix surrounded Sacred Games with a wider commissioning pipeline. Its 2018 announcements named or discussed projects including Ghoul, Selection Day, Bard of Blood, Leila and the film adaptation of The White Tiger. The February 2018 slate announcement specifically listed Sacred Games, Selection Day and Bard of Blood among Indian productions.
| Strategic element | What Netflix was testing |
|---|---|
| One flagship series | Whether a Mumbai-set Indian thriller could attract international attention |
| Multiple genres | Whether Indian originals could include horror, sports drama, espionage and dystopian fiction |
| Books and established IP | Whether literary adaptations could reduce the risk of developing every story from scratch |
| Creator partnerships | Whether global distribution could attract and retain premium Indian talent |
The projects were announced at different stages. An announcement was not proof that every title had been completed, released, or commercially successful.

The market problem Netflix could not solve with one hit
Global availability does not equal global viewing, and a celebrated show does not automatically produce mass-market scale. In 2018, Netflix faced competition from Amazon Prime Video and Indian services including Hotstar, ALTBalaji, Voot and Eros Now. The contemporary subscriber figures cited by Scroll.in were reported estimates, not Netflix’s audited title-level disclosures.

India also presented practical constraints:
- lower willingness to pay than in many established Netflix markets;
- mobile viewing and data costs;
- competition for attention from inexpensive local and regional programming; and
- limited public information about how many people watched any particular Indian original.
Netflix generally does not publish detailed Indian, title-level viewing figures. That makes it possible to document the company’s intentions, releases and promotional claims, but difficult to calculate Sacred Games’ exact reach, subscriber acquisition or profitability.
Streaming freedom, with qualifications
Netflix presented direct-to-streaming distribution as an alternative to some theatrical and television constraints. A platform release could support longer narratives and projects that did not depend on opening-weekend box office. But “freedom from censorship” is too broad: streaming productions remain subject to law, contracts, platform rules and business decisions. The evidence supports a claim about a different commissioning and distribution route, not an absence of constraints.

Release and second season
Season 1, consisting of eight episodes, launched on July 6, 2018. Netflix later promoted the first season as receiving strong worldwide response, but that language is promotional rather than an independently audited rating. Season 2 was announced for August 15, 2019. Its directing structure split the central storylines: Anurag Kashyap directed Ganesh Gaitonde’s track, Neeraj Ghaywan directed Sartaj Singh’s plot, and Vikramaditya Motwane served as showrunner. Netflix’s announcements document the season-two first look and the August 15 release date.

Pricing and device localization
Netflix later adapted its India proposition beyond content. In July 2019 it introduced a ₹199-per-month mobile-only plan and said Indian members watched more on mobile devices than members anywhere else. That price is historical, not a current offer. In August 2020, Netflix launched a Hindi-language interface, extending localization to navigation as well as programming.
Netflix India’s landing page displayed plans from ₹149 to ₹649 per month when checked on August 18, 2026. Prices, eligibility and plan features can change; readers should verify the live Netflix India signup page before subscribing. A subscription is useful only if Sacred Games is available in the reader’s country and the catalog justifies the cost.
The strategy in 2026
Netflix’s February 2026 India slate still emphasizes multiple languages, genres, creators and what it calls “many Indias.” That continuity suggests Sacred Games was an early expression of a durable model, not a one-off experiment. It does not prove that every forecast made in 2018 came true.
What Sacred Games proved—and what it did not
- It proved Netflix was willing to invest in Indian originals designed for simultaneous international distribution.
- It showed that cultural specificity could be part of a global positioning strategy rather than something to conceal.
- It strengthened the talent proposition for Indian creators working in serialized streaming.
- It did not, by itself, prove that Netflix had solved India’s pricing, mobile-access, competition or audience-measurement problems.
- Worldwide availability was not evidence of worldwide viewership, and promotional praise was not an audited performance metric.
The clearest reading is that Sacred Games was all three things at once: a content bet, a talent-acquisition strategy and a market-entry tactic. Netflix tried to win credibility in India by making an Indian story at premium scale, then tried to make that same investment valuable worldwide.
