Sabrina Carpenter performed “Tears,” from her album Man’s Best Friend, at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on September 7. Watch the official performance video on MTV’s YouTube channel.
What happens in the performance?
Carpenter rises through a manhole into a stylized New York street scene. Dancers and drag performers join her in a block-party-inspired staging, while the visuals evoke a back alley. The performance builds to a rain-soaked dance break.
Signs visible during the number include “Protect Trans Rights,” “Protect the Dolls” and “Dolls Dolls Dolls.” The FADER and other coverage described the staging as an expression of trans solidarity. That reading is grounded in the signs and the participation of drag and ballroom performers; the coverage does not establish a separate explanation from Carpenter about her specific intent.
Who appears with Carpenter?
The FADER reports that ballroom dancer Honey Balenciaga appeared in the performance. Dancers and drag performers also feature in the staging.

What does the rain finale reference?
Harper’s Bazaar reported that the rain sequence referenced Britney Spears’s 2001 “…Baby One More Time” performance. It is best understood as a reported visual homage, not a formal choreography credit or a direct statement from Carpenter.
