In her October 11, 2026 review for But Why Tho?, Kate Sánchez praises its human portrait and gives it 9/10, while noting that the series’ thematic, non-linear structure can be hard to follow and that some difficult subjects receive limited attention.
What does the Saban documentary cover?
The series follows Saban from his college playing days through coaching jobs with the Cleveland Browns, Michigan State, LSU, the Miami Dolphins and Alabama. Rather than simply moving from one stop to the next in chronological order, it uses ideas about coaching, leadership and personal life to connect career milestones.
That approach gives the series room to consider what decisions meant to the people around Saban, not just what they meant for wins and losses. One example is the 2018 SEC title game, when Saban replaced Jalen Hurts with Tua Tagovailoa. The review says previously unseen locker-room footage revisits the moment and its impact on Hurts and the team. Hurts’s choice to stay at Alabama as a backup and continue developing becomes part of a larger story about trust between player and coach.
The series also returns to episodes that complicate Saban’s legacy: the Dolphins’ decision to sign Dante Culpepper rather than Drew Brees, Saban’s regret about his time in Miami, resentment among some LSU players after he left for the NFL, and tensions with coaches including Lane Kiffin. Sánchez finds that the documentary includes criticism but does not always stay with the negative perspectives long enough.

Does Saban show a different side of Nick Saban?
That is the documentary’s central strength in Sánchez’s assessment. Alongside the demanding coach known for intense sideline behavior, the series presents a more personal portrait shaped by his relationship with his father, moments of vulnerability, retirement and partnership with Terry “Miss Terry” Saban. The review describes Terry as an active partner in his career and Alabama football, rather than a peripheral presence.
The documentary also frames Saban’s “Process” as more than a route to winning: it includes fundamentals, respect, compassion, discipline and player development. The review points to his interest in sports-psychology advice and educational facilities as examples of that wider focus. These are the reviewer’s interpretations of the series, not independent findings about Saban’s private life or coaching methods.

What works—and what is less successful?
Relationships and consequences are given real weight
The most persuasive material, as described in the review, connects championships and career choices to mentorship, player development and the people affected by Saban’s decisions. Rather than treating coaching as a sequence of results, the series asks what those results and choices meant to individuals.
The non-linear structure can be difficult to track
Organizing the story around themes instead of a clear timeline creates connections across different jobs and eras, but it can also make the career harder to follow. Viewers looking for a straightforward year-by-year biography may find the transitions disorienting.

Some thorny questions remain at the edges
Sánchez’s main reservation is that the series does not fully pursue certain difficult subjects, including name, image and likeness (NIL) and the circumstances around Saban’s retirement. Critical perspectives are present, but the review suggests they do not always receive sustained attention.
Is Saban worth watching?
For viewers interested in how leadership, family and player relationships intersect with a major coaching career, the series sounds more revealing than a conventional season-by-season recap. Its strength is the human context around decisions and accomplishments; its trade-off is a structure that can be less accessible and a critical treatment that, in the reviewer’s view, leaves some questions underexplored. Sánchez rates it 9/10. That is her review score, not an aggregated critics’ rating: Rotten Tomatoes’ listing showed zero critic reviews when checked.

Rotten Tomatoes describes the series as drawing on hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage and interviews with more than 70 voices. Those are catalog descriptions, not figures independently confirmed by the review. The review also notes that closing cards show Alabama-era win-loss records, NFL draft outcomes and player graduation figures, but does not reproduce the numbers; specific statistics should not be attributed to it without checking the documentary or a primary record.
