The headline’s “two cast changes” refers to the first two roster moves; Aytes’s status change is an additional, separate development. Ilonzeh was announced in a recurring role, not as a series regular.
Who is Devin Gamble on S.W.A.T.?
Gamble is a new member of Hondo’s 20-Squad, played by Annie Ilonzeh. CBS describes her as a cop whose family is deeply entrenched in crime. TVLine’s July 18 report adds that she grew up in a Los Angeles family involved in crime, became a standout LAPD rookie, and left for Oakland after her father was arrested for a heinous crime. Hondo recruits her back to Los Angeles to fill an open place on the team.

How do the changes fit the team’s earlier departures?
TVLine noted that Alex Russell, who played Street, and Kenny Johnson, who played Luca, had been written out in Season 7. Those departures help explain the team openings, but they were not new Season 8 casting announcements.

TVLine also quoted showrunner Andrew Dettmann on the possibility of returning characters: “I think we still want to be true to the stories we’ve told.” The remark concerns whether previously written-out characters might return; it does not announce a specific return.

CBS announced “Vanished” as the Season 8 premiere for Friday, October 18, 2024, from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The episode synopsis said Hondo’s team would race to find missing students and their bus driver, who was Hondo’s former high-school football coach.
