Amazon’s current series overview names Dave Bautista as Kratos, following a recasting reported by Variety.
Was Ryan Hurst cast as Kratos?
Yes. Amazon MGM Studios announced Hurst as Kratos in January 2026. The casting had a notable connection to the games: Hurst voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Amazon MGM’s original announcement confirms his initial casting, and PC Gamer notes his earlier game role.
Who is playing Kratos now?
Dave Bautista is now named as Kratos on Amazon’s current series overview. Variety reported in July 2026 that the role was being recast after Hurst was injured on set, then reported in August that Bautista had officially been set for the part. The injury and timing explanation comes from Variety’s reporting, rather than a quoted studio statement: July report and August report.
What is the God of War series about?
The Prime Video adaptation follows Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, as they journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. Amazon describes the relationship at the heart of the story this way: “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
