Here are six useful ways to understand the film, from Michael B. Jordan’s dual role to its unusually wide and tall images.
1. What is Sinners about?
Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack as they return to their hometown to establish a juke joint. Their plans unfold amid the racism and restrictions of Jim Crow-era life, alongside a supernatural danger. The film moves among horror, gangster drama, blues, romance and action rather than staying within one genre. Coogler called it “genre-fluid,” telling CBS News that its genres shift at different times and, he hoped, would “sync up.”
2. Michael B. Jordan plays both twins
Jordan takes the dual role of Smoke and Stack. He told CBS News that he spoke with real-life twins and listened to their experiences growing up as part of his preparation. The brothers are distinct characters, not simply one performance duplicated: the twin casting lets the story place their contrasting personalities and shared history at its center.
3. The blues story comes from Coogler’s family connection
Coogler has described Sinners as “a love letter to my uncle, who was born and raised in Mississippi, who loved the blues.” He told CBS News that his uncle’s love of the music was part of the inspiration. The Associated Press also connected the project to Coogler’s family ties to Mississippi and the records he listened to after his uncle died. That personal starting point helps explain why music and the community around the juke joint matter as much as the vampire premise.

4. The historical setting and the supernatural plot are distinct
The film places its characters in the specific social conditions of 1930s Mississippi, where Jim Crow shaped Black life. Its vampires and other supernatural events are fictional horror elements, not historical claims. The Directors Guild of America discusses the film in the context of the period, while the AP describes a day in Clarksdale as a community prepares to open a juke joint and confronts a vampire threat. The story’s blend works by setting an invented supernatural crisis against a grounded place, period and musical culture.
5. The film uses width and height to shape its visual world
Sinners was captured in large formats, including 65mm IMAX and Ultra Panavision 70, and uses markedly different aspect ratios: an extremely wide 2.76:1 image and a taller 1.43:1 IMAX image. These are different visual presentations, not interchangeable labels for one screen shape. Coogler told the DGA that the width suited the Delta’s flat terrain and sense of isolation, which he described as both peaceful and frightening. Reporting by TheWrap and Filmmaker Magazine covers the film’s format choices; Coogler also discussed film stocks and formats in a Kodak-partnered explainer.

Industrial Light & Magic visual-effects supervisor Nick Marshall said ILM worked on just under 100 shots across two sequences: a rattlesnake encounter and a train’s arrival. That figure describes ILM’s contribution, not the total visual effects work on the film. Marshall’s account appears in ILM’s February 7, 2026 interview.
