The first trailer for Rust, Joel Souza’s Western starring Alec Baldwin, appeared on March 26, 2025. It introduced footage from a fictional story about a boy on the run with his estranged grandfather. The film had already premiered at a Polish film festival in November 2024, and it opened in theaters on May 2, 2025.
What does the Rust trailer show?
The trailer offered the first publicly released trailer footage from the Western. The film’s story centers on a 13-year-old boy in 1880s Kansas. After his parents die, he is left to care for his younger brother. When he is sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a rancher, he escapes with his long-estranged grandfather. The New Mexico Film Office lists Souza as the film’s director and describes this fictional premise in its production listing for Rust.
The title’s “first footage” framing refers to the trailer, not to the first time the film was screened. Rust had its world premiere months earlier, at a Polish film festival on November 20, 2024, according to the Associated Press report on the premiere.

The real on-set shooting was separate from the film’s plot
During production in New Mexico in 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot in an on-set incident involving a firearm Baldwin was holding; director Joel Souza was injured. The incident led to a criminal case against Baldwin, which was dismissed in 2024. The film later completed production and was released in theaters, as The Guardian’s trailer report and ABC News’ release report recount.
That real production tragedy is not the fictional killing in the Western’s premise. The film’s plot concerns a boy who accidentally kills a rancher; Hutchins’s death occurred during production, not as part of the story.
