Rust 2024 is an optional Rust language edition, not a new compiler that forces every project to change at once. It became stable with Rust 1.85.0 on February 20, 2025. A crate opts in by declaring its edition in Cargo.toml; crates on different editions are designed to interoperate.
What a Rust edition changes
An edition groups selected changes to Rust’s language and tools that might otherwise disrupt compatibility. Choosing a new edition lets a crate use those changes while keeping older crates and dependencies usable alongside it. The Rust compiler version and a crate’s edition are separate choices: installing a newer compiler does not automatically change every crate’s edition.

What changed in Rust 2024
The Rust Release Team’s Rust 1.85.0 announcement groups the edition changes across language behavior, the standard library, Cargo, Rustdoc, and Rustfmt. This is a high-level map; the Edition Guide chapters describe the specific rules and migration cases.

Because some changes affect semantics and others concern syntax, tooling, or formatting, do not treat this summary as a list of uniform code rewrites. Check the relevant Edition Guide chapter when a warning or changed behavior affects your crate.
How to migrate a crate to Rust 2024
The migration is opt-in and can be done crate by crate, including within a workspace. A practical sequence is to run the edition fixer, inspect what it changed, set the crate’s edition, and then verify the result.

- Use a suitable stable toolchain. Rust 2024 is stable from Rust 1.85.0. Select or install a stable compiler that supports the edition.
- Run Cargo’s migration fixes from the crate or workspace root:
cargo fix --edition. The fixes are conservative and may leave cases for you to handle manually. - Review the diff and relevant Edition Guide chapters. Decide whether to accept each suggested change; the fixer’s output is not a recommendation that every transformation is necessary.
- Set the crate’s edition in
Cargo.toml:edition = "2024". If Rust 1.85 is also the minimum supported compiler for that crate, you may declarerust-version = "1.85"; do not raise the minimum unless that matches your support policy. - Run checks and tests, then validate the application’s behavior. Review compiler warnings and investigate failures rather than assuming the migration is complete because the automated step succeeded.
The Rust Release Team’s Rust 1.85.0 announcement points to the Edition Guide and describes cargo fix as an aid, not a substitute for review. The official migration guidance aims to avoid automatic changes that could alter correctness or performance, but corner cases can still require manual work.
Does Rust 2024 break backwards compatibility?
It is not a compulsory ecosystem-wide upgrade: each crate chooses its edition, and crates using different editions are designed to work together. A project can therefore adopt Rust 2024 incrementally instead of converting all dependencies at once. However, an edition migration can expose source-level changes or require code updates inside the crate being migrated, so compatibility between editions does not mean every migration is automatic or risk-free.

Where to learn the new idioms
The Rust Project’s The Rust Programming Language uses Rust 2024 idioms and is available online; it can also be accessed offline with rustup doc --book. The book is a general learning resource, not a prerequisite for migration.
