Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep a YouTube playlist moving in a Dockerized GStreamer setup, you need three separate pieces: a playlist controller to select and advance videos, GStreamer to play each media URI, and a Docker restart policy to restart the container if its process exits. Docker will not recover a playback pipeline that errors while its process stays alive. The design below explains that boundary and how to choose the right recovery behavior.
How the playlist, player, and container fit together
A reliable design separates responsibilities instead of treating a playlist URL as a complete streaming pipeline:
- Playlist layer: use yt-dlp or your own application code to enumerate entries and decide the order and retry/skip behavior.
- Playback layer: pass a resolvable media URI to GStreamer’s
playbin, or build an application around the GStreamer API. - Recovery layer: handle playback errors and end-of-stream in the application; let Docker restart the process if it exits.
playbin plays a URI, supports network buffering, and reports events such as errors, end of stream, tags, and state changes on its bus. It does not by itself provide a managed playlist service. Your wrapper can monitor those events, advance to the next item, and choose whether a failed item should be retried, skipped, or cause the application to exit. GStreamer playbin documentation
Build the playlist and playback logic
Use yt-dlp to enumerate playlist entries
yt-dlp documents playlist extraction; by default, it extracts playlist entries in full. Its --flat-playlist option avoids extracting entry details, which may affect whether the media can be handed directly to your player. Confirm the current behavior, available formats, and yt-dlp version when implementing, because extraction compatibility can change. yt-dlp README

Pass one media URI at a time to GStreamer
Resolve an individual playlist item to a playable media URI, then configure playbin with that absolute URI. When playback ends or the bus reports an error, your controller should apply its chosen policy and set up the next item or terminate. This is an application design, not a documented one-command yt-dlp-to-GStreamer playlist recipe.
yt-dlp’s FAQ documents writing media to standard output with -o - and demonstrates piping that output to VLC. That supports the general player-pipe pattern, but it is not evidence of a tested GStreamer command or of playlist sequencing handled automatically. yt-dlp FAQ

Use gst-launch for experiments, not as the application controller
gst-launch-1.0 can help you test a pipeline, but GStreamer describes it primarily as a debugging tool and says, “You should not build applications on top of it.” For a durable playlist controller, use a small application with the GStreamer API (including gst_parse_launch() where appropriate) so it can observe bus events and implement the playlist’s error and transition rules. GStreamer gst-launch-1.0 documentation
Choose what should happen when playback fails
Make the application’s policy explicit. An error can trigger a retry of the same item, a skip to the next item, or a non-zero process exit. End-of-stream can advance normally or terminate, depending on whether the playlist repeats. If the process remains alive after an internal pipeline failure, Docker’s restart policy has nothing to restart; the application must repair, replace, or stop the pipeline itself.

- Retry: useful when a temporary media or network failure should not skip the item. Define a limit or other stopping condition to avoid a stuck retry loop.
- Skip: keeps the playlist progressing when an item cannot be played. Log the failed item so the issue is visible.
- Exit: lets Docker restart the container, but only if the process actually exits. Choose an exit status that matches the restart policy.
These are design choices for your controller; GStreamer’s documented bus events provide the signals to observe, not a preconfigured playlist recovery policy. GStreamer playbin documentation
Configure Docker to restart an exited process
Docker’s wording is precise: “A restart policy controls whether the Docker daemon restarts a container after exit.” A restart policy is not a health check for a live GStreamer pipeline. Docker: start containers automatically

Pick a policy based on how you stop the service
| Policy | When it restarts | Manual stop and daemon behavior |
|---|---|---|
no |
Does not automatically restart; this is the default. | No automatic restart behavior is configured. |
on-failure[:max-retries] |
Restarts after a non-zero process exit; an optional retry limit can cap attempts. | Does not restart merely because the Docker daemon restarts. |
always |
Restarts after the container exits. | Has special handling after a manual stop; choose it only if that behavior fits your operations. |
unless-stopped |
Restarts after exit. | Preserves a manual stop across daemon restarts. |
These behaviors are documented by Docker; consult its restart-policy guidance for the exact lifecycle semantics before deployment. Docker restart policies
Example: Docker Compose configuration
For a service that should come back after a process exit and remain stopped if an operator deliberately stops it, set unless-stopped:

services:
playlist-stream:
image: your-gstreamer-playlist-image
restart: unless-stopped
This is a configuration example, not a complete application image or a tested container recipe. The application inside the image still needs playlist traversal, media-URI handling, GStreamer bus monitoring, and a defined response to errors and end-of-stream.
Example: docker run configuration
The equivalent policy can be set when creating a container:
docker run -d --restart unless-stopped --name playlist-stream your-gstreamer-playlist-image
Use on-failure instead if a manual stop should stay in effect and you only want restarts after a non-zero exit. Use always only when the documented behavior after a manual stop and daemon restart matches your operational intent. Docker container run reference
What Docker restart does—and does not—recover
- Container process exits: Docker can apply the configured restart policy.
- GStreamer reports an error but the process remains alive: Docker does not restart the individual pipeline. The application must handle the bus event or exit.
- Playlist reaches its end: your controller decides whether to loop, advance, or exit; a restart policy alone does not define playlist order.
- Repeated startup or media failures: select retry limits and logging deliberately so the service does not silently cycle without useful diagnosis.
Operational checks before leaving it unattended
- Confirm that yt-dlp resolves the playlist entries and media formats you intend to use; re-check current behavior and update guidance in its project documentation.
- Verify that the controller obtains an absolute, playable URI for each item and observes GStreamer bus errors and end-of-stream events.
- Decide whether each failure should retry, skip, or exit, and ensure the chosen Docker policy matches that decision.
- Check container logs for the current playlist item, state transitions, errors, and restart cycles; log enough to distinguish a failed item from a process restart.
- Respect rights and the source service’s applicable terms when accessing or redistributing media. The technical documentation cited here does not establish permission to stream a particular recording.
