There are three practical ways to download an RTVE video: use the official RTVE Play app for app-managed offline viewing, use yt-dlp to save a local file where the page and your rights allow it, or try a desktop downloader with a graphical interface. These methods do not produce the same result: an app download is not necessarily a transferable video file, and third-party tools do not work with every RTVE title.
Which RTVE download method should you use?
| Method | Best for | Result | Cost | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTVE Play app | Simple offline viewing on a phone or tablet | Content saved for playback in the app; do not assume it is a normal video file | Free for RTVE Play; Play+ may require a subscription | Only eligible titles show a download option |
yt-dlp |
Terminal users who need a local file or repeatable workflow | A media file, if the specific page exposes an extractable stream | Free and open source | Site changes, page type and rights restrictions can prevent a download |
| Desktop GUI, such as 4K Video Downloader Plus | Users who want point-and-click controls | A local file if the application recognizes the URL | Free tier and paid plans; check the vendor page for current terms | The vendor’s published page does not guarantee support for RTVE URLs |
RTVE Play is RTVE’s streaming and catch-up service. It replaced “A la Carta” in June 2021 and includes live and on-demand programming. “RTVE downloader” is a general search phrase, not the name of one official standalone RTVE downloader. RTVE Play+ is a separate international subscription service; catalog access can depend on region and program rights. RTVE’s FAQ explains the service and its availability limits.
Method 1: Download inside the RTVE Play app
Choose the official app if your goal is watching a program offline, not moving or editing a video file. RTVE describes downloads for selected content in its mobile and tablet apps. The Android app listing also advertises offline viewing. See the RTVE Play listing on Google Play.
- Install the official RTVE Play app from the appropriate app store.
- Open the program, episode or film you want to watch.
- Open the video’s options menu and choose Descargar or Download, if shown.
- Find the saved title in the app’s downloads or Mis contenidos area and play it from there.
The download is intended for offline playback through RTVE Play. RTVE’s cited instructions do not say that the saved item becomes an unrestricted MP4, so do not expect to find a transferable file in your device’s ordinary Downloads folder.

If the download option is missing
- Make sure you are using the mobile or tablet app rather than the website, and update the app.
- Open the program’s main page instead of a search-result preview, then confirm the title plays online.
- Check free storage, network access and the app’s permissions; try Wi-Fi if a download will not start.
- Some titles are not licensed for offline use, live streams may not qualify, and a program may have been removed or become unavailable in your region.
RTVE says some films and documentaries are restricted on the web because of audiovisual rights and that some programs are geoblocked in particular countries, including examples in the United States and Canada. A missing button can therefore reflect the title’s rights or availability rather than a problem with your device. Check RTVE’s availability guidance.
Method 2: Download with yt-dlp
yt-dlp is a free command-line downloader. Its supported-sites list includes RTVE’s A la Carta and Play pages as well as separate RTVE extractors for live, program and television pages. That listing is not a guarantee that every URL or title will work: site support can change, and an individual page may be unavailable or expose no extractable formats. Check the current supported-sites list.
Install from the official project instructions
The project provides a standalone executable for Windows and macOS, and installation options for Unix-like systems and Python. Use the official installation page rather than an unfamiliar download mirror. Follow the yt-dlp installation instructions.
For a Python installation, the documented command is:

Copy the URL of the specific RTVE video or program page and run:
yt-dlp "https://www.rtve.es/..."Replace the example URL with the page you want to download. The actual formats and resolutions depend on what that title makes available.

yt-dlp -F "https://www.rtve.es/..."To ask for the best available video and audio combination, with a fallback to the best single format, use:
yt-dlp -f "bv*+ba/b" "https://www.rtve.es/..."If the selected video and audio are separate streams, yt-dlp may need a supported post-processing tool to merge them. The resulting container and available quality depend on the streams exposed for that title and the tools installed on your system. A downloader cannot create genuine 4K when the source does not offer it.
Set a readable filename
To save using the title and its detected extension, run:
yt-dlp -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" "https://www.rtve.es/..."Fix common errors
- Unsupported URL: Check that you copied the actual video or program page, update
yt-dlp, and try again. RTVE live, program and on-demand pages may use different extractors. - No formats found: The page may be a listing without a playable video, the title may have been removed or restricted in your country, or RTVE may have changed its delivery system.
- No sound or a merge error: Try
-f "bv*+ba/b". If separate streams were selected and merging fails, install the post-processing tools recommended by the official project documentation. - Region blocked: A downloader is not a way around RTVE’s regional rights restrictions. Check whether the title is available to you through RTVE Play in your location.
When a URL stops working, update first and retry. The project warns that supported-site entries can become outdated as websites change; the current version’s result for the specific page is the useful test.

Method 3: Try a desktop GUI downloader
A graphical downloader avoids terminal commands and may offer menus for quality and save location. 4K Video Downloader Plus describes a copy-and-paste workflow: copy a video URL, paste it into the application, choose settings and start the download. Its published page lists services such as YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, TikTok, SoundCloud and Dailymotion, but does not establish guaranteed RTVE support. Treat compatibility as something to test on your exact page, not a promise. Check the vendor’s product page and current plan details.
- Download the application only from the vendor’s official site.
- Copy the URL of the RTVE video page in your browser.
- Paste the URL into the application and wait to see whether it detects a title and formats.
- If it does, choose a destination and an available quality, then start the download.
- If it detects nothing, use RTVE Play for eligible offline playback or try
yt-dlpif you are comfortable with a terminal.
The vendor page lists a free Starter plan and paid Lite, Personal and Pro plans; features and prices may change. A paid GUI does not make a restricted or protected stream downloadable, and the highest output quality cannot exceed what the title makes available.
Choose the method that fits your goal
- Want the simplest offline viewing? Use RTVE Play’s app download when the title offers it.
- Need a local file and can use a terminal? Try an up-to-date
yt-dlpinstallation on the specific RTVE page. - Need a local file without commands? Test a GUI downloader and confirm that it recognizes the page before relying on it.
- Nothing works? Check whether the page is a playable video, whether the title is still available in your region, and whether your software is current. If the title is restricted or removed, changing downloader is unlikely to solve that.
Rights, privacy and safety
Only save and use content you are authorized to download, and respect RTVE’s terms, copyright and regional licensing limits. Being able to stream a program does not automatically grant permission to redistribute it. Personal offline viewing and sharing or republishing a file are different uses; applicable exceptions depend on jurisdiction and circumstances.
Avoid browser-based download sites that ask for your RTVE login, require an unknown extension or executable, demand a private URL upload, or promise to defeat geoblocking or access controls. Aggressive pop-ups and fake download buttons are further reasons to leave. Prefer the official app, the official yt-dlp project, or the genuine vendor site for a GUI.
