RTMP and SRT are primarily used to move live video into or between production systems; HLS is primarily used to deliver video to viewers over the web. They are not three interchangeable ways to do the same job. Choose based on where the protocol sits in your workflow, which endpoints support it, and the latency and reliability trade-offs the full chain can meet.

At a glance: contribution or audience delivery?

Protocol Typical role Transport and behavior What to check
RTMP Contribution or ingest when the receiving service accepts it TCP-based delivery with retransmission behavior Ingest endpoint and codec compatibility
SRT Contribution between encoders, gateways, and receivers UDP transport with acknowledgments, retransmission, and a configurable latency buffer Support at both endpoints and matching configuration
HLS Audience-facing delivery through HTTP servers and CDNs HTTP delivery; can provide adaptive-bitrate renditions Player, origin/CDN, packaging, and Low-Latency HLS support if needed

In a typical workflow, an encoder sends a contribution feed to an ingest or receiving system, which may then package and distribute video to viewers. RTMP or SRT may be relevant on the contribution side; HLS is relevant to the viewer-facing delivery side. A system can use different protocols at different stages.

RTMP: a widely used ingest option

RTMP is a mature protocol originally developed for Flash that remains in use for live-streaming ingest. Its TCP-based delivery and retransmission behavior can suit workflows whose receiving endpoint expects RTMP. The protocol label alone does not determine the delay viewers experience: encoding, network conditions, ingest processing, playback, and buffering all contribute.

Codec compatibility depends on the particular endpoint and implementation. Haivision’s 2022 comparison notes limitations around newer codecs such as HEVC; that is not a universal statement about every RTMP implementation. Check the destination’s current ingest and codec requirements before building a workflow around it.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

SRT: contribution with configurable recovery

SRT is an open-source video transport that runs over UDP. It uses packet acknowledgments and retransmission, commonly described as automatic repeat request (ARQ), and a configurable latency buffer to recover from packet loss. That recovery can help on an unpredictable network, but the buffer adds delay. The actual trade-off depends on configuration and network conditions.

SRT transports media; it does not, by itself, define the viewer-facing web playback layer. A receiving system may need to convert or package the incoming feed into a format such as HLS for audience delivery. Confirm that both the sending and receiving endpoints support SRT and agree on the required settings.

HLS: delivery over HTTP and CDNs

HLS sends audio and video over HTTP, allowing delivery through ordinary web servers and CDNs. It supports live and on-demand streams, multiple bitrate renditions, and switching between renditions as bandwidth changes. Apple also documents encryption and authentication support.

Traditional HLS prioritizes reliability over minimizing delay. Apple puts it plainly: “Historically, HLS has favored stream reliability over latency.” Low-Latency HLS reduces delay while retaining scalability, using mechanisms such as partial segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reload, preload hints, and rendition reports. Those mechanisms require compatible production and delivery infrastructure; enabling a player setting alone is not enough.

How to choose for your workflow

  • Choose SRT for contribution over a variable public network when packet-loss recovery is useful and both endpoints support it. Set the recovery buffer with the expected network conditions and acceptable delay in mind.
  • Choose RTMP when the receiving ingest service or production workflow expects it and its supported codecs fit your source. Verify the current endpoint requirements rather than assuming all services accept the same formats.
  • Choose HLS for broad audience delivery through web infrastructure and CDNs. Use adaptive renditions when viewers have varying bandwidth. Consider Low-Latency HLS only if the production, origin/CDN, packaging, and playback chain all support it.

Before committing, evaluate endpoint compatibility, codec requirements, target end-to-end latency, packet loss and round-trip time on the contribution path, expected audience scale, and operational complexity. No protocol name guarantees a specific end-to-end delay; the encoder, network, receiving system, packaging, CDN, and player all matter.

What latency comparisons can and cannot tell you

Haivision’s 2022 comparison reports that SRT was more than twice as fast as RTMP in its compared setup, and 5 to 12 times faster in tests using dedicated hardware encoding and decoding. Haivision says its measurements included encoding, travel to and from test destinations, decoding, and display/server/player buffering. These are vendor-reported results from particular test conditions, not independent universal benchmarks or a prediction for another workflow. Do not infer a general speed ratio from them.

For a useful comparison in your own setup, measure from a defined point at the source to a defined point at the destination, under representative network conditions. Include the player and its buffer if the question is when viewers see the video; measuring only transport time does not capture end-to-end latency.
