Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Islamic Hijri calendar. Ramzan is a Persian-influenced form of that month’s name. Roza means fasting in Persian usage, so it describes the practice, not the month. The words are related to the same observance, but they are not interchangeable.
What do Ramadan, Ramzan and roza mean?
| Term | What it names | Language context |
|---|---|---|
| Ramadan (Ramaḍān) | The ninth month of the Hijri year, between Shaʿbān and Shawwāl | Arabic name; commonly written “Ramadan” in English |
| Ramzan | The same month called Ramadan | A Persian-influenced pronunciation and spelling |
| Roza (rūza) | Fasting | Persian term for the practice; Arabic terms include ṣawm and ṣiyām |
The Cairo Arabic Language Academy defines Ramaḍān as the fasting month and ninth month of the Hijri calendar. Encyclopaedia Iranica distinguishes the words for fasting: Arabic ṣawm or ṣiyām, and Persian rūza. Thus, a person may observe roza during Ramadan; roza is not another name for Ramadan.
Why is the month called Ramzan by some people?
“Ramadan” is the familiar English spelling of the Arabic name. In scholarly transliteration, the Arabic letter ḍād is marked with a dot, producing Ramaḍān. Persian pronunciation provides a route to the “z” in Ramzan: Encyclopaedia Iranica notes that Arabic consonants including ḍād are rendered as /z/ in Persian. This is a linguistic explanation for a Persian-influenced form, not a claim that every Persian speaker or Muslim community uses the same pronunciation or spelling.
Neither spelling signals a different month or religious event. The forms reflect language history and transliteration choices; the sources do not establish one as the only correct English form for all communities.

Why do Ramadan dates move each year?
The Hijri calendar is lunar, so Ramadan does not begin on a fixed Gregorian-calendar date. Traditionally, the beginning is associated with sighting the new crescent. A report in Sunan Abi Dawud gives the instruction to begin the fast after sighting the moon, or after completing thirty days, and applies the same approach to ending the month. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta describes visual sighting as the traditional basis for determining Ramadan’s start.
Authorities may use different methods or issue calculated calendars. For example, Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) publishes a calendar calculation that uses astronomical conjunction timing. As a result, dates can vary by year and by the authority or method followed. A date should be tied to a particular location and authority rather than presented as universal.

What does fasting have to do with the month?
Fasting is central to Ramadan. Encyclopaedia Iranica identifies Qur’an 2:183–185 and 2:187 as key passages concerning the prescription and regulations of fasting. This explains the close everyday association between the month and the practice, while the words themselves remain distinct: Ramadan or Ramzan names the month, and roza names fasting in Persian usage.
Questions about personal exemptions, obligations or whether a fast is valid are religious rulings, not questions of spelling; seek guidance from a qualified religious authority for those circumstances.
