Rosie O’Donnell criticized Ann Coulter after the conservative commentator mocked a widely shared video of 17-year-old Gus Walz reacting emotionally to his father Tim Walz’s speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
What Ann Coulter posted about Gus Walz
Tim Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 21, 2024. During the speech, cameras showed his son Gus, then 17, reacting with visible emotion and expressing support for his father.
On August 22, Coulter posted the words Talk about weird
beside a news link about Gus’s reaction, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Coulter later deleted the post after widespread criticism.
Rosie O’Donnell’s response
O’Donnell shared a screenshot of Coulter’s post on Instagram and condemned it. Variety reported her caption verbatim as: talk about a cruel heartless woman – shes the worst.

O’Donnell was one of several public figures who objected to Coulter’s comment. Variety also quoted television host and political commentator Ana Navarro calling the target of the post a 17 year-old special needs kid -not involved in politics-
and describing the attack as heartless.
What was publicly disclosed about Gus
The Walz family had discussed Gus’s nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD and anxiety in an August 2024 People interview, as reported by PolitiFact and contemporaneous coverage. Those disclosures provide family-reported context about Gus, but they do not establish that a diagnosis caused any particular reaction. The convention footage showed a teenager responding emotionally to his father’s speech; it was not evidence requiring a medical explanation.

A fake Tim Walz response also circulated
As the controversy spread, a purported screenshot claimed that Tim Walz had insulted Coulter in response. PolitiFact found no evidence that the screenshot was authentic and rated the claim false. It should not be presented as a genuine post by Walz.
