Roseanne has two different endings to keep straight. The 1997 finale revealed that Roseanne had fictionalized much of the Conners’ story: they had not won the lottery, and Dan had died. The 2018 revival reset that part of the continuity by making Dan alive, and The Conners carried that version of the family through its series finale on April 23, 2025. In that final chapter, the family gets no windfall—just a $700 check, a meal together, and a farewell at Roseanne’s grave.
What happened at the end of the original Roseanne?
The 1997 finale reframed what viewers had seen: Roseanne had been writing a fictionalized version of her family’s life. In that account, the Conners had not won the lottery, and Dan had died after his heart attack. The lottery fortune and Dan’s continued presence in the later episodes were part of Roseanne’s story, not the family’s reality as revealed in the finale.

That ending is not the final word on Dan in the continuing franchise. The 2018 revival established a different continuity, in which Dan was alive and his apparent death belonged to Roseanne’s unpublished writing.
Is Dan alive in The Conners?
Yes. The revival brought Dan back as a living character, and The Conners continues from that version of events. Roseanne, by contrast, is dead in the spin-off: the series explains her death as an accidental opioid overdose. The final season follows the family as Dan and Jackie pursue a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company they hold responsible.

Where does each Conner end up?
| Character | Where the finale leaves them |
|---|---|
| Dan | He receives a $700 check after a difficult deposition, visits Roseanne’s grave, and ends the series with a goodnight to the audience. |
| Becky | She remains sober and gets a good job, a personal accomplishment rather than a resolution through marriage. |
| Jackie | She passes the tests to return to the police force. |
| Darlene | She confronts insecurity in her marriage to Ben, and the finale leaves them together. |
| Mark | He leaves for New York to pursue IT work, putting his computer skills to use instead of following the expected college path. |
| DJ | He remains with his wife and daughter in Germany; he does not return onscreen in the finale. |
Why is the lawsuit payout only $700?
The case does not turn into another lottery-style escape from the family’s problems. Dan receives $700 after his deposition, and the family uses the small award for a meal together. Executive producer Bruce Rasmussen described the goal as letting the characters improve “but not in an unrealistic way, like winning a lottery,” as quoted by TheWrap on April 23, 2025.
The small check also echoes the original show’s lottery storyline while refusing to repeat its sudden transformation into wealth. The finale’s resolution is about incremental progress and staying connected, not a dramatic financial rescue.

What does the final scene mean?
At Roseanne’s grave, the family tells her how they are doing. Dan recognizes that their children can manage their own lives, and the gathering turns the goodbye into an update to the person whose absence has shaped the series. The family later comes together in the living room, where Dan says goodnight directly to the audience.
That last address serves as both Dan’s farewell and the show’s. Executive producer Bruce Helford told TheWrap, “Dan saying goodbye to the audience, that was all John and it was wonderful.” Dave Caplan, another executive producer, said the actors’ emotion in the family scene was real: “We did not know they were going to get there emotionally.” The producers chose to leave that feeling in the episode.

How many endings does the Roseanne story have?
For the question “Where do the Conners end up?”, use the 2025 finale of The Conners: Dan is alive, Roseanne is gone, and the family carries on with modest gains and a shared goodbye. The 1997 Roseanne finale is a separate reveal about Roseanne’s fictionalized account, in which Dan was dead and the lottery win had not happened. The revival revised that continuity rather than leaving Dan dead in the continuing story.
