Ron Howard and Henry Winkler reunited onstage at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15, 2024, to mark 50 years since Happy Days began. The tribute placed the two stars on a recreation of Arnold’s Drive-In, the sitcom’s familiar gathering place.
What happened at the 2024 Emmys?
The Television Academy included the Happy Days reunion among the memorable moments of its 2024 Emmy telecast. Howard and Winkler appeared together on a recreated Arnold’s Drive-In set, recalling the restaurant where characters in the sitcom spent time. The Television Academy’s retrospective identifies the reunion, while TVLine’s report describes the setting.

Why was the reunion an anniversary tribute?
The occasion was the show’s 50th anniversary, counted from its 1974 debut. The New York Times says Happy Days premiered in January 1974; the available source establishes the month and year, not an exact premiere day. The New York Times’ coverage connects the anniversary to the Emmy tribute.
A book for a wider look at the series
For readers interested in the sitcom’s broader production history rather than just the Emmy reunion, 50 Years of Happy Days: A Visual History of an American Television Classic offers season-by-season history, photographs and interviews. Written by Brian Levant and Fred Fox Jr., with a foreword by Winkler, the hardcover was published by Insight Editions and distributed by Simon & Schuster on November 19, 2024. The publisher lists 264 pages and ISBN 9798886636451. Simon & Schuster’s description also reports that the show reached 30 million viewers weekly at its peak; that is the publisher’s stated figure.
