Role Play starts with a familiar marriage-game premise and gives it a lethal secret: Emma’s anniversary night with her husband Dave exposes her hidden life as an international assassin. Prime Video presents the 2024 film as comedy, action and suspense, but the mix is the question at its heart—does the marriage story hold its own beside the spy trouble?
What is Role Play about?
Emma and Dave are celebrating their wedding anniversary in New York City with a night of role-play. The game takes a dangerous turn when Bob discovers that Emma has a secret life as an international assassin, putting her family at risk. That setup makes the marriage itself part of the action: Dave is not simply caught in a chase, but forced to confront how much of the life he shares with Emma he actually knows.
Prime Video’s listing categorizes the film as comedy, action and suspense. Those labels describe its intended blend, rather than guaranteeing that each element will land equally for every viewer.
Does the marriage comedy work with the action?
The premise promises an appealing contrast: familiar domestic life on one side, professional danger on the other. The anniversary role-play is a natural bridge between them, because the couple’s playful attempt to change their usual routine becomes tangled with Emma’s much larger deception. The central comic possibility is not only the absurdity of an assassin’s double life, but the strain of trying to keep a marriage intact once the secret is out.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The challenge is balance. A relationship comedy needs room for the couple’s reactions and changing trust; an action thriller needs momentum and credible danger. If the plot rushes from reveal to peril, the marriage can feel like a device for launching set pieces rather than the story’s emotional center. Conversely, a viewer mainly seeking high-intensity spy action may find the domestic complications a detour. The film’s appeal therefore depends on whether you enjoy action stories that make a couple’s dynamic part of the entertainment, not just the stakes.
How does it compare with Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Ghosted?
The title’s comparison to Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Ghosted works best as shorthand for a broad combination: romantic or marital complications meeting secret-agent danger. It is not a claim that the films share the same plot, style or quality. Role Play puts an anniversary and a concealed assassin identity at the center, so its particular hook is the collision between a spouse’s hidden work and the couple’s everyday family life.

That makes it a plausible choice for viewers who want a lighter relationship premise alongside danger, rather than a straight espionage procedural. Whether its tone feels endearing or its jokes consistently funny is a matter of execution and taste, not something the genre labels settle on their own.
