The newer interface supports video and autoplay capabilities, although Roku has not published one universal audio rule or ad-removal switch for every device and market.
This is advertising in the Roku interface—not evidence that Roku inserts commercials into Netflix, Disney+, Max, HDMI inputs, or other apps’ programs.
What Roku originally announced
On April 30, 2024, CEO Anthony Wood said Roku planned to add video to the Marquee, a prominent advertising area that had traditionally used static creative. Coverage at the time described the plan as an expansion of the existing Home Screen unit, not a promise to place commercials throughout every Roku menu or over every video source. (BGR; Tom’s Guide)
Roku did not initially specify a launch date, worldwide availability, frequency, sound behavior, or a consumer control that would remove the placement. Wood also said the company was testing other Home Screen video-ad experiences, so the Marquee announcement was the clearest confirmed format rather than a complete description of every future design.

Where the ad appears
The Roku Home Screen
The Home Screen is the launcher shown when a Roku TV or player starts, where users choose apps, inputs and other Roku functions. A Home Screen ad is a platform-interface placement. It is separate from advertising inserted into an ad-supported channel’s programming.
The Marquee unit
Roku describes Marquee as a native placement spanning about one-third of the Home Screen. In the earlier interface it was a prominent, generally right-side area. In the redesigned interface, Roku says it can appear immediately when the TV turns on and remain visible while viewers browse. (Roku’s Marquee product page)
What this does not establish
- It does not show that Roku places ads inside a paid Netflix, Disney+, Max or similar subscription stream.
- It does not show that Roku overlays commercials on an HDMI source or on top of unrelated playback.
- It is not automatically the same thing as Roku City sponsorships, screensaver promotions, pause-screen ads or in-stream ads.
Did the rollout actually happen?
Yes. Roku’s own statements moved the feature from a proposal to an operating advertising product.

What changes with the 2026 Home Screen
The redesign is broader than a video-format upgrade. Roku says it adds more content-oriented discovery, Quick Access shortcuts, a collapsed menu, a Roku City tile and topic-oriented features such as Daily Scoop. The Marquee is also positioned for visibility at initial power-on instead of requiring a user to scroll to it. (Roku’s Home Screen announcement)

Roku’s advertising material says the redesigned Home Screen supports richer video formats, including autoplay capabilities. “Autoplay capabilities” does not prove that every creative on every device automatically starts, nor does it establish whether audio plays.

Will every Roku device show the same thing?
No universal, simultaneous experience has been established. Roku says the redesigned Home Screen began rolling out across Roku TVs and streaming devices in the United States, with additional countries to follow. A particular Roku TV or player may therefore retain the older interface while the update is staged to its software build.
- Country: The announced rollout starts in the U.S.; other markets may receive different timing or formats.
- Device: Roku TV models and standalone players can update on different schedules, and manufacturer-specific television software may vary.
- Interface version: The older Home Screen and redesigned Home Screen do not place the Marquee identically.
- Creative: Advertisers and targeting rules can produce different ads for different households.
Roku’s Marquee page reports that the Home Screen reaches more than 125 million people in U.S. households daily, based on Roku’s internal Q4 2024 data. That is a company-reported U.S. audience estimate, not an independent global audit. (Roku Marquee page)
Does the video autoplay with sound?
The public material confirms support for video and autoplay capabilities, but it does not establish one universal sound policy for every Roku model, software version and country. Roku has not stated that all ads are muted, always audible or governed by one global setting.

If audio matters to you, observe the behavior on your own device after the redesigned Home Screen arrives. Do not infer a system-wide rule from one television, one advertisement or an older interface.

Roku’s public Home Screen announcement and Marquee product material do not document a universal setting that removes the Marquee placement or disables all Home Screen advertising. The announcement discusses personalization, but it does not promise an ad-removal switch. (Roku Home Screen announcement)
You can review the current Settings and privacy or advertising menus on your specific Roku model, but changing personalized-ad preferences should not be described as removing the Home Screen unit unless Roku’s device-specific documentation says so. A factory reset, blocking the internet or replacing the launcher can impair normal streaming functions and is not a practical general solution.

Why Roku is expanding Home Screen advertising
Roku increasingly treats its operating-system interface as advertising inventory as well as a way to launch apps. Video gives advertisers more storytelling and interaction than a static image, while a placement shown at power-on can be sold for launches, sponsorships and discovery campaigns.
Roku says the Home Screen supports advertising, subscriptions, content discovery and engagement. Its advertising materials describe campaigns for entertainment, automotive, consumer packaged goods, travel and other categories, while executives specifically cited automotive and non-media advertisers for the video-enabled Marquee. (Roku Q4 2025 transcript)
The trade-off is straightforward: advertising can help fund a platform and free, ad-supported content, but motion and autoplay make commercial messaging harder to ignore. Roku says it is trying to preserve a familiar interface while improving discovery and monetization; claims about satisfaction or performance are Roku’s own, not an independent consumer consensus. (Roku advertiser announcement)
What Roku still has not specified universally
- One fixed ad frequency for all users.
- A single audio policy for every device and market.
- A guaranteed consumer opt-out from the Marquee placement.
- Identical availability across countries, Roku TVs and streaming players.
- Whether future Home Screen designs will make the unit more or less prominent.
Roku’s buying information also reflects a changing commercial system. Its Marquee page lists direct, packaged, programmatic and Roku Ads Manager routes, while a February 2026 earnings discussion described certain unique Home Screen units as not programmatic at that time. Those statements may refer to different buying paths or changing availability, so neither should be treated as a permanent rule. (Marquee product page; Q4 2025 transcript)
How to identify which Home Screen you have
- Press the Home button and note whether the interface still uses the older layout or the redesigned, more content-forward layout.
- Check whether a Marquee-style placement is visible immediately at power-on or only after navigating across the Home Screen.
- Open your device’s Settings and review the displayed software information; rollout timing depends on the installed build and region.
- If the redesign has not appeared, wait for Roku’s staged update rather than assuming the device is excluded.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Roku’s Home Screen video advertising launched after the 2024 announcement and is becoming more visible as the 2026 interface rolls out. It is a Roku launcher ad, not proof of commercials inside your streaming subscriptions or HDMI video. The exact audio behavior and any universal way to remove the placement remain undocumented across devices and markets.
