Roku Error Code 003 means the device cannot download a required software update. First wait a few minutes and retry, then check the selected Wi-Fi network and restart the Roku and router. If the update still fails, try a phone hotspot: success points toward the home network, while failure on multiple connections is a reason to contact Roku Support.
What Roku Error Code 003 means
Roku identifies Error 003 as an update that cannot be downloaded. It is an update problem—not, by itself, evidence of an app playback, billing, HDMI, remote-control, or hardware failure. Roku lists update-service availability and network connection problems among the possible causes. Roku’s update troubleshooting guide gives the error meaning and recommended checks.
The message can appear during first-time setup or activation, after a factory reset, after a device has been disconnected for a long time, or when you manually check for an update. Roku devices also check for updates automatically at startup and periodically—about every 24–36 hours, according to Roku’s software-update guidance.
Try these fixes in order
- Wait and retry. Leave the Roku powered on for several minutes, then try the update again. Roku says its update service may be temporarily unavailable; check Roku’s support site for any outage notice rather than assuming a current outage.
- Confirm the Wi-Fi network. Press Home, open Settings > Network, and verify that the Roku is connected to the intended network. Reconnect if it selected an old or incorrect network, and carefully re-enter the password.
- Run the connection test. If the menu is available, go to Settings > Network > Check connection. The test distinguishes a problem connecting to the router from a problem reaching the internet. Menu wording can vary by model, software version, TV manufacturer, and region. See Roku’s connection-test instructions.
- Restart the Roku. Where available, choose Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart, then select System restart. If the menu is inaccessible or frozen, unplug the Roku from power, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and retry.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both devices; if you have a combined gateway, unplug that unit. Wait 20–30 seconds, reconnect the equipment, and allow internet service to return fully before retrying. Roku’s support pages give different wait intervals for different restart instructions, so this is a practical update-focused interval rather than a required exact timing.
- Improve the signal. Move the Roku closer to the router, away from thick walls or cabinets, and avoid placing it where the TV blocks the wireless signal. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band as a test; neither band is best in every home.
- Check for the update manually. On the Roku, open either Settings > System > Software update > Check Now or Settings > System > System update > Check now, depending on the interface. If an update is found, it downloads and installs, then the device reboots.
- Test a different internet connection. Connect the Roku temporarily to a phone hotspot or another trusted network, then retry the update. If it completes, reconnect the Roku to your usual home network afterward.
- Try Ethernet if your model supports it. Connect the Roku directly to the router and retry. Ethernet is not available on every Roku; check the specific model before buying an adapter or cable.

This is a troubleshooting guide to interpreting your own test results, not an official Roku diagnosis. A phone or laptop working on the same Wi-Fi does not prove the Roku has a reliable connection to the update service.

Special cases to check
After a factory reset or during setup
A reset can put the Roku back into setup, where it still needs to download required software. Prioritize correct network credentials, a stable connection, a router restart, and the hotspot test. Avoid repeating factory resets: they erase configuration and do not repair a blocked or unstable path to Roku’s update service.
Guest, hotel, dormitory, or public Wi-Fi
Some shared networks isolate devices, apply additional filtering, or require a browser-based sign-in. A Roku may connect to the local network but still be unable to reach the internet or update service. If possible, use a private home network or hotspot for setup and updates. A guest-network failure alone does not prove the Roku is faulty.

Speed, signal, and filtering are different issues
A fast connection is not necessarily a reachable or stable one: DNS filtering, parental controls, firewall rules, ISP restrictions, or intermittent drops can interfere. Roku lists typical streaming requirements of about 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD, but these are streaming expectations—not a guaranteed minimum or diagnostic threshold for a software update. Its connection guidance also distinguishes signal quality from internet download speed.
Roku wireless audio equipment
If you use Roku wireless speakers, a wireless soundbar, or a subwoofer, Roku says those devices update alongside the Roku TV or player. Keep the audio equipment powered on, with its status light lit, and within range during the update.

USB updates and factory resets
Roku says some Roku TVs that cannot connect to the internet may be able to update through USB. This is not a universal option for Roku TVs or streaming players; identify the exact TV model and follow its applicable instructions through Roku’s software-update page. A factory reset is a last resort, not a fix for an internet or update-service access problem. Roku lists it among advanced connection troubleshooting options in its network guidance.

- Contact your internet provider if other devices also lose internet, the connection repeatedly drops, or the Roku updates on a hotspot but not your home network. Ask whether router security, DNS filtering, parental controls, or other network settings could be blocking the connection. Roku’s Wi-Fi guidance also recommends contacting the provider when connection trouble persists: Roku Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
- Contact Roku Support if Error 003 continues across multiple networks, the device cannot update on a strong connection or supported Ethernet connection, or a new Roku fails during initial setup. Use Roku’s support troubleshooting and contact options.
Have these details ready: Roku model number; TV manufacturer and model, if it is a Roku TV; the exact on-screen message; whether the error occurs during setup or a later update; whether a hotspot or Ethernet was tested; and whether other devices work on the same home network. These results help distinguish a home-network issue from a problem that needs Roku’s attention.
