There is no single required Rocky Horror Picture Show costume: choose a character, then build a recognizable look that suits your budget, comfort and event. Frank-N-Furter is the obvious showpiece, but Janet, Brad, Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia, Rocky, Eddie and Dr. Everett V. Scott all offer options. For a screening, check the theater’s prop rules before bringing anything.
How to choose a Rocky Horror costume
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 musical, horror and science-fiction film. 20th Century Studios lists its release date as February 23, 1975 and identifies Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter, Barry Bostwick as Brad and Susan Sarandon as Janet. The official fan-site cast list also names Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia, Rocky Horror, Eddie and Dr. Everett V. Scott.
Start with the character you want to embody, not a supposedly mandatory uniform. The film’s original production notes identify Sue Blane as costume designer and describe elements including “merry widow corsets, garter belts and half tuxedos.” That is broad design context, not a complete inventory of every character’s screen wardrobe.
- Recognizability: Which character cues can you put together with clothes and accessories you already own?
- Comfort and movement: Can you sit through a screening, move around at a party or perform comfortably in the outfit?
- Assembly: Would you rather adapt existing clothes, sew or assemble pieces, or look for a ready-made costume?
- Event: A screening, party and stage performance may call for different levels of detail and practicality.
Exact screen outfits, colors, fabrics and accessory sets are not established here for every character, so treat the ideas below as starting points rather than a definitive replica guide.

Frank-N-Furter
For a screen-inspired interpretation, build around the theatrical corset-and-garter or half-tuxedo design elements described in the production notes. Adapt the look to your comfort and the event; those notes do not specify a complete outfit checklist. Optional accessories can add drama, but choose pieces that are safe and practical for the venue.
A specialty retailer’s licensed collection listed a Frank-N-Furter costume and wig, but the listings were marked unavailable when checked. This confirms product categories, not current stock. Check the retailer’s live listing for availability, sizing and licensing before buying.
Magenta
Use your preferred interpretation of Magenta as the starting point and focus on a few clear character cues rather than assuming one exact screen-accurate combination. The same retailer listed a Magenta costume and wig, as well as a Frank-N-Furter/Magenta couples costume; those products were unavailable on the page when checked, so their current availability is unconfirmed.

Riff Raff and Columbia
Riff Raff and Columbia are options if you want a character look beyond the central Frank-N-Furter choice. Assemble a personal interpretation from clothes you have, or look for a ready-made version if one is currently in stock. The specialty retailer catalog listed costumes for both characters and a Riff Raff wig, but its listings were unavailable when checked.

Janet and Brad
Janet and Brad are named among the film’s principal characters by 20th Century Studios. You can choose to evoke either character with a look assembled from your wardrobe, without treating an unverified outfit detail as canonical. Think about comfort and whether the outfit works for sitting through a screening or participating in a party.
Rocky, Eddie and Dr. Everett V. Scott
The official fan-site cast list includes Rocky Horror, Eddie and Dr. Everett V. Scott. Each makes a valid character choice, whether you assemble an interpretation yourself or find suitable pieces. The sources cited here do not establish complete screen-outfit inventories or currently available licensed costumes for these characters.

Finding a ready-made costume
A specialty retailer advertised an officially licensed Rocky Horror collection with costumes for Frank-N-Furter, Magenta, Riff Raff and Columbia; wigs for Frank-N-Furter, Magenta and Riff Raff; and a Frank-N-Furter/Magenta couples costume. The page showed the listings as unavailable when accessed, so do not assume any item is currently in stock.
If you shop online, search for Rocky Horror Picture Show costume or a character-specific phrase such as Frank-N-Furter costume. Before ordering, verify the exact listing, seller, licensing claim, size range, price and stock. The official fan site also links to an Amazon RHPS store, but that link does not establish a specific product’s current availability or terms.

Props depend on the theater. The official fan-site guide says its recommendations may vary with theater policy or local customs; ask the venue before packing anything. A prop that appears in a participation guide is not automatically permitted at every screening.

The fan-site list names rice, newspapers, water pistols, candles or flashlights, rubber gloves, noisemakers, confetti, toilet paper, toast, party hats, bells and cards. It warns against throwing hot dogs or prunes because they can attract rodents and stain the screen, and specifically cautions about theater policy on open flames.
- Check the venue’s current rules before bringing props.
- Favor permitted, low-mess items and keep them manageable in a crowded room.
- Do not bring or use an item the theater prohibits, including an open flame where disallowed.
Costume events and the 50th anniversary
In an April 28, 2025 announcement, the official fan site described a North American 50th-anniversary tour featuring costume contests, live shadow casts and a traveling exhibit in select cities. It reported a scope of more than 40 cities in the U.S. and Canada. That is historical context for the announced tour, not confirmation of current dates, locations or ticket availability; check the event organizer for current information.
