Armstrong later said he had received “great news,” but the public update did not say what Rockstar offered or confirm that the fan played the game.
What happened?
Armstrong, a developer at Ubisoft Toronto, sought help reaching Rockstar about an exclusive early playtest for a family member in Canada who was a Grand Theft Auto fan. MobileSyrup reported on January 19, 2026, that the family member had cancer and had reportedly been given 6–12 months to live. That prognosis is a personal detail attributed to news coverage, not independently verified medical information. MobileSyrup’s report said the relative lived near Rockstar Toronto’s Oakville office.

Armstrong’s original LinkedIn request was later deleted. MobileSyrup reported that he subsequently said he had contacted Rockstar and received “great news,” without disclosing further details.
Did Rockstar let the fan play GTA VI early?
That has not been confirmed publicly. GameSpot reported on January 20, 2026, that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had reached out. It quoted Armstrong’s follow-up: “We spoke to them today and got great news. That’s all I can really say, but thank you all from the bottom of my heart.” The statement confirms contact and a positive response as Armstrong described it; it does not specify an arrangement or say that a play session took place. GameSpot’s report likewise does not establish that the fan played GTA VI.

When is GTA VI scheduled to release?
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists November 19, 2026, as the planned release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The request concerned a private early playtest, not a publicly announced early-access program.
Separately, Take-Two announced on June 24, 2026, that preorders would begin June 25, with a US starting price of $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition price of $99.99. Those are dated US-dollar announcement figures, not a guarantee of current prices. Take-Two also said the physical boxed version would contain a download code inside the box. Neither a preorder nor a boxed copy was described as a way to obtain the private early access sought in Armstrong’s request. Take-Two’s announcement has the details.
