EL PAÍS reported that Garlington remembered a relationship with Hudson from 1962 to 1965, kept discreet during Hudson’s Hollywood career. Garlington also recalled that he later read in a biography that Hudson had called him his “true love”; that description comes to readers through Garlington’s account, not a directly verified quotation from Hudson.
Who was Lee Garlington to Rock Hudson?
EL PAÍS identified Garlington as Hudson’s partner from 1962 to 1965. Its 9 October 2015 story is a retrospective account of their relationship, told through Garlington’s recollections. The report says Garlington first saw Hudson at Universal Pictures and later received a call to meet him.
Garlington remembered Hudson warmly. In the Spanish report, he described Hudson as “un amor” and said he adored him. The account does not provide independent corroboration for every detail, so the dates and memories are best understood as Garlington’s recollections as reported by EL PAÍS. Read the EL PAÍS report.
How did they keep the relationship private?
Garlington recalled that discretion was understood rather than explicitly demanded: he said Hudson never had to ask him to keep the relationship secret because he already knew that was necessary. According to the report, they took practical steps to avoid drawing attention:

Hudson had relationships with different men at different points in his life. Lee Garlington’s reported relationship belongs to the 1960s. Marc Christian was a separate, later partner: CNN’s interview transcript and the Los Angeles Times’ legal coverage place Christian’s relationship with Hudson in the final years of Hudson’s life. Christian testified that their relationship began in 1983 and later sued over Hudson’s concealment of his illness. Those accounts concern Christian, not Garlington, and do not independently establish Garlington’s dates.

Those recollections are separate from Garlington’s story; they should not be treated as one continuous relationship. CNN’s transcript also identifies Phyllis Gates’s 1987 book My Husband, Rock Hudson as her memoir, not Garlington’s account.
