Roberto Orci, the Mexico City-born writer and producer whose credits included Star Trek, Transformers, and a long list of television series, died at his home in Los Angeles on February 25, 2025, aged 51. The Los Angeles Times reported kidney disease as the cause and said his manager confirmed his death; the Television Academy also records February 25, 2025 as his passing date.
Who was Roberto Orci?
Orci was a Mexican-American writer and producer born in Mexico City on July 20, 1973. He moved to the United States with his family when he was nine, according to the Los Angeles Times. His career crossed television and studio filmmaking, from early series writing to major franchise films. The Television Academy describes a body of work that included writing and producing hundreds of television episodes.

How did Orci and Alex Kurtzman become collaborators?
Orci met Alex Kurtzman in a film studies class at Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences in the Santa Monica area. They began writing and producing together in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with television work that included Alias, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Xena: Warrior Princess, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Orci once described their differences as part of the partnership. In a 2009 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said Kurtzman was born in the United States while he was born in Mexico City, adding that they were “drawn to each by what each of us lacks.” He compared the partnership to the opposites Kirk and Spock, saying they could “go warp speed together.”

Franchise screenplays
Orci and Kurtzman co-wrote Transformers (2007), then worked on its 2009 sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Their film collaborations also included Mission: Impossible III, Cowboys & Aliens, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The Television Academy lists Orci as a screenwriter on The Island, The Legend of Zorro, Transformers, and Star Trek (2009), among other films.

Orci and Kurtzman served as executive producers and screenwriters on the 2009 Star Trek reboot and co-wrote Star Trek Into Darkness. The Los Angeles Times reported that Orci was preparing to direct the third reboot-era film but stepped back from writing and directing in December 2014. He ultimately received a producing credit on Star Trek Beyond (2016); the reporting cited here does not establish a screenplay credit for him on that film.
Television work
Orci’s television credits included Alias, Fringe, Transformers Prime, Sleepy Hollow, Scorpion, and Hawaii Five-0. The Television Academy lists writing and producing roles across several of these series, along with episode-writing work on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Jack of All Trades, and Matador. Orci and Kurtzman created Sleepy Hollow with Phillip Iscove. TheWrap describes the Hawaii Five-0 reboot as a ten-season run on CBS.

Producing beyond those franchises
The Television Academy also lists Orci as a producer on The Proposal, Now You See Me, People Like Us, and The Mummy. These credits show that his work extended beyond the best-known science-fiction and action properties.
What recognition did Orci receive?
TheWrap reports that Orci shared a Daytime Emmy Award in 2012 for Transformers Prime. It also reports that he and Kurtzman, alongside J.J. Abrams, received Hugo Award and Writers Guild of America nominations for Fringe; the screenplay for the first Abrams Star Trek feature received a WGA nomination in 2010. In 2017, the National Hispanic Media Coalition gave Orci its Visionary Impact Award for contributions to Latino portrayals in film and television, according to TheWrap.

How did colleagues and family remember him?
Orci’s brother J.R. Orci told the Los Angeles Times that he was “a visionary storyteller with a boundless heart and a beautiful soul.” He also remembered him as a compassionate friend who would put his life on hold to help a stranger and make room in his home for an overlooked shelter dog.
For Transformers (2007), the Los Angeles Times cited Box Office Mojo’s figure of more than $700 million worldwide. That figure is reported through the newspaper’s attribution and is not a separate box-office verification here.
