Robert Irwin’s first fashion photoshoot appeared on the cover of Australia’s Stellar magazine in July 2022, presenting him in styled hair and outfits far removed from the khaki workwear familiar from his wildlife work. But Irwin’s comments about the shoot made clear that the contrast was more than a makeover: khaki carried a sense of connection to his father, family and purpose.

Contemporary reports described the cover feature as Irwin’s first fashion shoot. Pedestrian reported a variety of looks and described one outfit as a tan jacket over a green shirt; Starts at 60 highlighted a double-denim look. Both contrasted with the practical khaki clothing audiences commonly associate with his wildlife work. Pedestrian’s July 3, 2022 report and Starts at 60’s July 4, 2022 report described the styling and cover.
Pedestrian attributed the images to Stellar and photographer Christopher Ferguson. The coverage framed the polished styling as a striking change for someone so closely associated with khaki; “unrecognisable” captures that visual contrast, not a change in Irwin’s identity or work.
Why Irwin said khaki still felt like his own style
In comments reproduced by Starts at 60, Irwin joked, “I’ve actually become known as the fashionable Irwin,” and said his family teased him over “shants.” The same report quoted him explaining why his everyday uniform mattered beyond appearance: “I feel an incredible sense of pride when I put my khaki uniform on in the morning and it feels normal – more normal than anything else I wear.”

He connected that feeling to family and purpose: “Because it’s my every day and I feel this connection to dad. I feel this connection to my family and this sense of purpose. That’s what fashion can do. It’s empowering.” The remarks make the shoot’s central contrast more personal: he could take part in a fashion feature without treating khaki as something he needed to leave behind.
A separate 7NEWS report later quoted Irwin reflecting on his father’s influence: “My dad wasn’t exactly a fashion icon, but he was iconic just in the fact that he made khaki cool,”. That recollection helps explain why the uniform represented more than a recognizable outfit.
