These descriptions come from Time+Tide’s 2019 article. Its author also speculates that Downey Jr. requests preferred brands through his stylist, but provides no direct confirmation, so that should not be treated as established fact.

Was Robert Downey Jr.’s Speedmaster fake?
That remains unproven. Time+Tide says Downey Jr. posted a 2015 set photograph from Avengers: Age of Ultron wearing a Speedmaster. The author then points to a close-up in a 2016 GQ collection video, where the word “Speedmaster” appears incorrectly printed on the dial. The article suggests the watch could be counterfeit, but also allows that the dial may have been poorly refinished.
This is an attributed visual suspicion, not an authentication finding. The available account does not establish the watch’s provenance, inspection history, or whether the pictured example was genuine. It is therefore more accurate to call it a Speedmaster with questioned dial printing than to state that Downey Jr. wore a fake watch.

Devon Works Tread 1: reported loan for Infinity War
Time+Tide reports that Downey Jr. borrowed the Devon Works Tread 1 for Avengers: Infinity War. Rather than conventional hands, the watch displays time using mechanically driven belts; the article says its mechanism is battery powered. It appears briefly in the film. The report supports describing it as a loan for the film context, not as a confirmed part of his personal collection.
Greubel Forsey GMT Tourbillon: premiere sighting
Time+Tide identifies a Greubel Forsey GMT Tourbillon at the Infinity War premiere. The same article notes that watches worn on press tours and red carpets are often loaned, but it does not say whether this specific example was borrowed or owned. The sighting identifies a watch at an event; it does not settle who owns it.

Blancpain at the 2026 Oscars
WatchTime’s 2026 Oscars report identifies a green Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Complete Calendar, reference 5054-0153-01S, on Downey Jr. It describes the watch’s date, day, month and moon-phase functions. That later sighting updates the public record of what he wore, but the report does not establish whether it was a loan or his property. WatchTime’s 2026 Oscars coverage names the reference.

The question is about Tony Stark’s screen wardrobe, not necessarily Downey Jr.’s belongings. WatchSpotting lists a likely Bulgari Diagono Sport sighting for Tony Stark in the 2008 film Iron Man, while noting confusion with a supposed Hublot. Its own confidence qualification matters: this is a likely costume identification, not a confirmed personal watch. WatchSpotting’s Iron Man sighting gives the identification and caveat.

GQ also reports that Downey Jr. wore an Urwerk while portraying Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. That is a screen appearance; GQ’s discussion of unconventional watch brands does not establish ownership. In that article, Urwerk co-founder Felix Baumgartner says, “A lot of watchmakers, they just repeat the old history of watchmaking.” He is discussing Urwerk’s design philosophy, not Downey Jr. GQ’s story on watch-brand philosophies supplies that context.

How to read a celebrity watch sighting
- Separate appearance from ownership: a set photo, premiere image or film scene shows a watch being worn, not who owns it.
- Keep the context attached: a reported loan for a production is different from a red-carpet identification, and both differ from a personal-collection claim.
- Preserve confidence qualifiers: “likely” is not a confirmed model identification, and a suspected dial irregularity is not proof of a counterfeit.
- Look for what the source actually documents: a named model, a reference number, a described mechanism or an ownership claim are not interchangeable kinds of evidence.
