Yes—both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are associated with Avengers: Doomsday. The key distinction: Downey is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor von Doom, or Doctor Doom, not as Iron Man. Evans is listed in the film’s cast, and footage shown at CinemaCon featured him as Captain America. The story has not yet explained how Steve Rogers returns.
What is confirmed about their returns?
Disney’s current official Avengers: Doomsday listing names both Downey and Evans in the cast. Their roles are not a simple return to the same status quo: Disney announced Downey’s new role as Victor von Doom in July 2024, while coverage of CinemaCon footage in April 2026 identified Evans as Captain America.

Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom
Disney announced Downey’s return to the MCU as Victor von Doom—Doctor Doom—at its July 27, 2024 presentation. He is not announced as returning as Tony Stark or Iron Man. Disney’s later cast announcement describes Downey as having played Tony Stark/Iron Man in ten MCU films; that history is distinct from his new Doomsday role. Disney’s announcement also names Anthony and Joe Russo as directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Chris Evans is associated with Captain America
Evans’s casting was first reported by TheWrap on December 10, 2024. A later official cast listing includes him, and the Associated Press reported that footage shown at CinemaCon on April 16, 2026 featured Evans returning as Captain America. Those later developments mean the story is no longer based only on the initial casting report.

Is Downey coming back as Iron Man?
No. Disney announced him as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. His return to Marvel follows his long run as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but the announced Doomsday role is a different character. The announcement establishes the casting, not the story explanation for why Downey is playing Doom.

How does Steve Rogers return?
That has not been explained in the cited official announcements or coverage. The available information does not establish the plot circumstances, timeline, or mechanism behind Steve Rogers’s appearance. A multiverse explanation, or any other specific account of how he returns, would be speculation unless the filmmakers or studio confirm it.
