LAPD says officers responded to a death investigation at Rob and Michele Reiner’s Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025, and that Nick Reiner was arrested later that evening. Prosecutors subsequently filed two murder counts, a grand jury indictment added a lying-in-wait allegation, and prosecutors announced they would not seek the death penalty. The charges remain allegations; Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Timeline of the investigation and case
December 14, 2025: Police respond and make an arrest
The Los Angeles Police Department said West Los Angeles Division officers responded at around 3:40 p.m. to a death investigation in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue. Officers found two victims, later identified as Robert “Rob” Reiner and Michele Reiner. LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division took over the investigation.
LAPD said Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. The department said he was booked for murder and held without bail. The Los Angeles Times, reporting on December 17 and citing Police Chief Jim McDonnell, placed the arrest near the University of Southern California and said it took place without incident. The Times reported that booking occurred at 5:04 a.m. on Monday, December 15.
December 16, 2025: District Attorney announces charges
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced two counts of murder against Nick Reiner. The filing included a special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders and an allegation that he personally used a knife. These are prosecutorial allegations, not findings of guilt. The office said LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division was continuing its investigation.

December 29, 2025: Medical Examiner records placed under security hold
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said it had received a court order, initiated by LAPD, placing a security hold on records in the Reiner case. The department said cause and manner of death had been released earlier but were no longer available because of the order. It said no other records, including the Medical Examiner report, could be released until further notice. The notice did not reproduce the earlier cause-and-manner information, so it should not be treated as establishing any particular medical finding.
August 12, 2026: Grand jury indictment unsealed; Reiner pleads not guilty
The District Attorney’s Office reported that a grand jury indictment had been unsealed. It retained the multiple-murder allegation and added an allegation of murder by means of lying in wait. The office also reported that Reiner pleaded not guilty.

September 15, 2026: Prosecutors rule out seeking the death penalty
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty. Hochman said the office had determined, after a review, that capital punishment was not the appropriate resolution in the case. The County said the case remained pending, Reiner was held without bail, and a motions hearing was scheduled for October 7, 2026. That date was still in the future as of September 15; no outcome of the scheduled hearing is established here. The County said that, if convicted, Reiner could face life in state prison without the possibility of parole.
What remains unknown or unconfirmed
The official statements cited here do not give an exact time of death or a detailed account of events leading to the deaths. The Los Angeles Times also reported that authorities had not provided a motive or a full narrative. The sequence of events should therefore not be inferred from the response and arrest times alone.

The Times reported a Santa Monica hotel stay and party-related details based on unnamed sources or family friends. It said it was unclear whether the reported hotel stay happened before or after the deaths. Those details are attributed news reporting, not an official chronology confirmed in the cited public statements.

The District Attorney’s Office states in its releases: “The charges filed in this case are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.” The murder counts, special-circumstance allegations, knife-use allegation, and lying-in-wait allegation describe the prosecution’s claims. They are not proof of guilt or a court verdict.
