To brighten a dark pre-recorded clip in an OBS YouTube loop, add a Color Correction filter to that clip’s video source, then adjust gamma, contrast, and brightness gradually while checking both shadows and highlights. OBS does not prescribe a universal setting for dark footage: the right adjustment depends on the source. For one repeating file, use a Media Source with Loop enabled; for a rotation of clips, use VLC Video with a playlist.
Brighten the clip with a source-level Color Correction filter
OBS’s Color Correction filter modifies a source’s color without changing the original video file. It is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Apply it to the video source rather than the whole scene when you want to correct only the clip; a scene-level filter can also affect other elements in that scene. OBS describes the filter and its controls in its Color Correction Filter guide.
- In OBS, find the scene containing the clip in the Scenes list.
- In Sources, right-click the clip’s video source and select Filters.
- Under Effect Filters, select the add button and choose Color Correction. Give it a recognizable name if prompted.
- Adjust Gamma, Contrast, and Brightness in small increments while viewing representative portions of the clip.
- Check the darkest details and the brightest areas. Keep enough shadow detail to see what matters without making highlights look washed out or removing all contrast.
- Review several scenes in the video, then check the result in OBS’s stream output before going live.
The available controls are not a recipe. The OBS guide lists Gamma from -3.0 to 3.0, Contrast from -4.0 to 4.0, and Brightness from -1.0 to 1.0; each has a documented default of 0.0. Those defaults are starting points, not recommended settings for every dark clip.
What the other controls do
The filter also includes Saturation (-1.0 to 5.0, default 0.0), Hue Shift (-180.0 to 180.0, default 0.0), Opacity (0.0 to 1.0, default 1.0), Color Multiply (default #ffffff), and Color Add (default #000000). OBS notes that Color Add changes dark colors and Color Multiply tints light colors. Change these only when the image needs that kind of color or opacity adjustment; they are not substitutes for diagnosing why a clip looks dark.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS’s Filters Guide also lists Apply LUT and Sharpen, among other effects. A LUT can be used for color grading, but OBS does not say one is required to brighten a dark clip. Start with Color Correction rather than stacking effects without a specific visual reason.
Set up the loop for one video or a playlist
Choose the playback source based on whether the stream repeats one file or rotates through several. OBS documents the Media Source and VLC Video options in its Media Sources guide.

| Need | OBS source | Loop behavior and consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local file | Media Source | Enable Loop. Loop is Off by default. “Restart playback when source becomes active” is On by default. |
| Rotate through multiple files | VLC Video | Add a playlist and use Loop Playlist, which is On by default. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. |
Media Source supports common local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Its YUV Color Range setting defaults to Partial. Don’t change the range just to make a dark image brighter: first establish that the source and output range are mismatched. An unjustified range change can alter the image rather than fix the underlying issue.
Check the correction at stream output, not just one frame
A filter can look acceptable on one scene and poor on another. Preview representative dark and bright portions, then inspect the actual OBS output. Watch for shadow details disappearing, bright areas losing detail, or color and contrast becoming unnatural. This is a practical review step, not a guarantee that a particular setting will suit every display or viewer.

Also consider playback visibility behavior. With Media Source, OBS’s “Restart playback when source becomes active” setting controls what happens when the source is activated again; it is On by default. For a loop that should resume rather than restart after a source is hidden and shown, check that setting as part of the scene workflow.
Dark SDR footage is not the same as HDR
Brightening an SDR clip with Color Correction does not turn it into HDR. YouTube’s HDR guidance applies to compatible HDR content and an encoder that supports HDR streaming. The retrieved YouTube guidance specifies HEVC and lists OBS 30.1 as a minimum for its described setup; these are HDR-workflow requirements, not general settings for correcting dark SDR footage. YouTube also says viewers without HDR support receive SDR and that the Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. Check YouTube’s current HDR live-streaming guidance if you are producing an actual HDR stream, since version-specific requirements can change.

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video for streaming and supports advanced productions in its encoder help. OBS is one software option; the color correction described above is an adjustment to the source in OBS, not a change to the source file itself.

- The picture is still too dark: Confirm the Color Correction filter is enabled on the intended video source. Adjust Gamma, Contrast, and Brightness gradually, checking multiple scenes rather than relying on one frame.
- Highlights look washed out: Back off the adjustment and compare bright areas as well as shadows. There is no documented universal preset that preserves every clip’s tonal range.
- Other scene elements changed too: Check whether the filter was added to the scene instead of the clip’s source. Move the correction to the video source if only the clip should change.
- The image looks wrong after changing YUV Color Range: Restore the previous setting and investigate whether the source and output ranges actually mismatch. Media Source defaults to Partial; the documentation does not recommend changing it as a general dark-video fix.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC; OBS says VLC must be installed for that source type to appear. Use Media Source if you only need a single looping file.
- The clip starts over when a source becomes active: Check Media Source’s “Restart playback when source becomes active” option. It is On by default, so activation can restart playback.
- HDR colors do not appear in the Live Control Room preview: YouTube says that preview does not show HDR colors. Confirm that the source and encoder are actually configured for HDR rather than treating the preview as an SDR brightness test.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube loop to continue without keeping OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload your corrected recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The video should be corrected before upload if you want the correction baked into the recording; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not apply OBS filters.
