Spoilers for The Rings of Power Season 2, Episodes 1–2. Season 2 changes the way viewers see Sauron: after Season 1’s Halbrand mystery, the audience gets access to more of his private world. In separate interviews, actor Charlie Vickers explains how he reshaped the performance for Sauron’s Annatar guise, while co-showrunner Patrick McKay describes why that deception must persuade the intelligent Celebrimbor. Actor Charles Edwards, meanwhile, identifies the specific weaknesses Sauron can exploit.

How Season 2 changes the audience’s view of Sauron

In a Moviefone interview, Charlie Vickers described Season 1 as laying groundwork while he played Sauron under the Halbrand identity. Season 2 shifts the point of view: “This season you shift perspective, and you get let into his private world.” That change is not simply another reveal of who Halbrand was. It gives viewers a closer look at Sauron’s intentions and at how he operates when he is no longer being read primarily through someone else’s suspicions.

McKay framed the broader season as “Sauron’s season,” one dominated by villains and shaped by conflict between Sauron and Adar. In TheWrap’s August 27, 2024 interview, he also described the season’s tone as more mysterious, mistier, and darker. The showrunners said Season 2’s story retained its original intention even as Season 1 was reaching audiences.

These are distinct perspectives from separate conversations: Vickers speaks about acting and character, while McKay discusses the season’s writing and dramatic design. Moviefone published its interview on August 27, 2024, ahead of the season’s original August 29 premiere on Prime Video; that launch context does not establish present-day availability in every region.

How did Charlie Vickers approach playing Halbrand and Annatar?

Vickers described Halbrand and Annatar as the same Sauron, but said the outward performance had to change. For Annatar, he worked with new makeup and costumes, a new accent and dialect, and a movement coach. The challenge was to make those external changes legible without losing the character’s internal motivation.

That distinction matters to the deception: Annatar is not merely Halbrand in different clothes. The presentation is a tool Sauron uses to approach Celebrimbor with a new identity and a persuasive offer. Vickers’s comments in the Moviefone Q&A describe how the actor built that contrast; they are not a claim that the two identities have different underlying motives.

Why must Annatar earn Celebrimbor’s trust?

In a CinemaBlend interview about the Episode 2 monologue, co-showrunner Patrick McKay connected the scene to the mythology of Sauron presenting himself as Annatar and deceiving Celebrimbor into making rings. The adaptation’s dramatic problem, he said, was to keep Celebrimbor intelligent and capable. Sauron therefore had to impress him rather than rely on Celebrimbor acting foolishly.

“And so Sauron needed to up his game and present in such a way that blew Celebrimbor’s mind,” McKay said. The line describes the writers’ approach to the scene, not dialogue from the episode. It also clarifies the appeal of the deception: Celebrimbor’s skill makes him a meaningful target, so Sauron’s success depends on presenting something that can meet the smith’s ambition and imagination.

CinemaBlend’s scene-focused coverage explicitly includes spoilers for the first two episodes, including Annatar’s presentation to Celebrimbor. That scope is narrower than the broader Season 2 character and production discussion in the other interviews.

What weaknesses does Celebrimbor bring to the story?

Charles Edwards names pride, ambition, flattery, and the rings themselves as vulnerabilities. In the Moviefone interview, he answered the question of whether Celebrimbor is susceptible to the rings’ power: “Yes, he’s very susceptible to pride, to ambition, to flattery, and yes, to the rings.” McKay also describes Celebrimbor as a genius. Taken together, those comments point to a character whose gifts and appetites are intertwined: he can recognize extraordinary craft, but the desire to create something great can also make him receptive to Sauron’s praise and promises.

What did Charles Edwards find in Tolkien’s writing about Celebrimbor?

At the London premiere conversation reported by About Amazon on August 20, Edwards said he consulted Unfinished Tales for a description of Celebrimbor that he did not find in The Silmarillion. Edwards interpreted that material as suggesting secret jealousy and a wish to rival his grandfather’s fame and skill. That is the actor’s reading of a textual source, rather than a statement about what the series explicitly shows.

The reference offers a useful route into Edwards’s portrayal: Celebrimbor’s ambition is not just a general desire to make beautiful objects, but can be read as bound up with legacy and comparison. The interview names Unfinished Tales as the book Edwards consulted and The Silmarillion as a contrast; it does not establish that either book alone dictates the show’s characterization.
