But the pieces do not always add up to emotional momentum. The episode is more convincing at pointing toward danger than at making its characters’ choices feel fully earned.
What happens in “Halls of Stone”?
Released September 12, 2024, “Halls of Stone” is listed at 1 hour and 1 minute; Apple TV’s episode listing describes the main strands as Durin’s growing suspicion of the Dwarven Rings, Celebrimbor reassessing his priorities, and Elendil seeking hope amid Númenor’s political upheaval. Apple TV lists the episode, while Prime Video availability may vary by region.
The episode’s most final turn comes in Númenor: after conflict with Valandil at a sacred hall, Kemen kills him with a ceremonial sword, and Elendil is arrested in Kemen’s stead. The violence gives the political struggle a personal cost, but its force depends on whether the story has built enough investment in the relationships around it. TV Insider’s account of Valandil’s death reports actor Leon Wadham’s reading of Kemen’s motive: “I think he just starts to feel he’s losing control of the situation.” That interpretation helps explain the impulse without making the killing feel inevitable.
Why the episode is harder to care about
The Ring’s effects arrive faster than the emotional case for them
The Dwarf plot has the clearest dramatic engine: King Durin’s Ring brings immediate benefits, while raising the question of what those benefits will cost. The danger is legible, and Durin and Disa give the thread a human center. Yet the episode’s suspense rests partly on the audience accepting the Ring’s influence before its inner workings and consequences have had much room to develop. The result can feel like a signal of future corruption rather than a transformation unfolding in front of us.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That distinction matters. A character becoming powerful is plot movement; watching that power change a relationship, a judgment, or a private fear is drama. “Halls of Stone” gestures toward the latter, but its compressed turns leave some of the emotional work for later.
Númenor’s crisis has a brutal event, but not enough breathing room
Valandil’s death should sharpen the stakes of Númenor’s divisions. Instead, the speed of the escalation risks making the scene register first as a shocking plot point and only afterward as a loss. Elendil’s arrest extends the consequence, but the episode’s larger political currents can still feel abstract beside the immediacy of the violence.

Forbes contributor Erik Kain makes a related criticism, calling the season a “dreary slog” and arguing that rushed Ring effects, a compressed timeline, and diminished Númenor weaken the story. That is one critic’s judgment, not a consensus; it identifies the episode’s central vulnerability, though. A political turn can be consequential on paper and still feel thin if characterization has not made its stakes intimate.
Lore is most effective when it serves character
The Dwarf story also brings the Doors of Durin into view, a recognizable Tolkien reference with genuine appeal for viewers who enjoy seeing the larger mythology take shape. Den of Geek reviewer Juliette Harrisson praises the Durin-and-Disa material and the episode’s darkening momentum, arguing that the story’s wheels are turning toward the core Rings plot. She rates the episode 4 out of 5. Her positive reading makes sense: this hour has direction and a stronger sense of approaching consequence than a purely transitional installment.

But a lore reveal is not automatically an emotional payoff. The Doors can enrich the world, and the Ring can connect this story to Tolkien’s wider mythology, while the episode still leaves viewers wanting more time with the characters affected by those developments. The A.V. Club’s more sardonic response to King Durin’s sudden mountain-finding ability likewise points to the gap between spectacle and earned character change. The issue is not that Tolkien references are inherently inert; it is whether they deepen the people and conflicts onscreen.
What works, and what does not
| Element | What works | What holds it back |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarves and the Ring | A clear source of power, temptation, and coming danger; Durin and Disa anchor the thread. | The Ring’s influence can feel announced more than gradually dramatized. |
| Númenor | Valandil’s death and Elendil’s arrest give the political struggle concrete consequences. | The escalation moves faster than the emotional investment needed to make the loss fully land. |
| Tolkien lore | The Doors of Durin connect the episode to a larger mythic world. | Recognition and spectacle cannot substitute for character development. |
| Episode momentum | Several plotlines point toward increasingly serious consequences. | Cross-cutting between them can make the hour feel like a collection of signals rather than one coherent build. |
Does “Halls of Stone” make the season more compelling?
Partly. The episode strengthens the sense that the Rings’ consequences are spreading, and its Númenor ending leaves no doubt that political instability can become personal catastrophe. The difficulty is connective tissue: the three strands—Dwarven power, Celebrimbor’s reconsideration, and Númenor’s crisis—do not consistently build on one another with enough clarity or emotional depth to make the whole hour feel inevitable.

That is why the split in critical response is useful rather than contradictory. Harrisson sees a grim but effective episode moving toward the heart of the Rings story; Kain sees a jumbled middle weighed down by compression. Both readings account for something real: “Halls of Stone” has forward motion and memorable lore, but forward motion is not the same as dramatic accumulation. Its best moments promise a more compelling story than the episode itself always delivers.
