What happened to Rihanna’s leaked injury photo?
The episode followed a reported assault on February 8, 2009. On February 10, TMZ reported that police had photographed Rihanna’s injuries. The article described facial contusions, swelling and bruising, a split lip, a bloody nose and bite marks, attributing those details to unnamed law-enforcement sources. It also reported that Rihanna said Brown struck her with his fists. These are claims in contemporaneous news reporting, not a medical record independently reviewed here. TMZ’s February 10 report carries a June 10, 2026 update.

SPIN reported on February 20 that the photograph had appeared on TMZ the previous evening, February 19. SPIN said the LAPD issued a statement that did not identify the person shown, but said the image appeared to have been taken during an official domestic-violence investigation. SPIN’s February 20 account is the available source for the reported publication and police response.
What did the LAPD say about the release?
SPIN reproduced two sentences from an LAPD statement. The first said: “The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence.” The statement also said: “A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination.” SPIN did not name a spokesperson.

The reported response focused on the confidentiality expected in domestic-violence cases and the seriousness of a possible breach. It does not, by itself, establish who released the photograph, how it left police custody, or what disciplinary or investigative steps ultimately followed.
Why was the photo’s publication a privacy issue?
The image was described by SPIN as appearing to come from an official investigation, rather than being an ordinary publicity photograph. The LAPD statement’s emphasis on victim confidentiality makes the central issue clear: investigative evidence can contain highly personal information about a victim, and its unauthorized disclosure can expose that person to further unwanted attention. That concern can be explained without circulating or linking to the image itself.

What is known—and what is not?
- Reported at the time: TMZ described Rihanna’s injuries on February 10, 2009, citing unnamed law-enforcement sources, and reported that police had photographed them.
- Reported later that month: SPIN said the photograph appeared on TMZ on February 19 and reported the LAPD’s response the following day.
- Not established in these accounts: the identity of the person who supplied the photograph, its complete chain of custody, and the final outcome of any later investigation.
UPI also reported on February 10 that Rihanna postponed a Malaysia concert and relayed that she had been treated and released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. That is secondary contemporaneous reporting, separate from what the two accounts establish about the photograph’s release. UPI’s report covers the concert postponement and treatment.
