Richard Simmons died from “sequelae of blunt traumatic injuries,” the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner determined. The department listed arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease as a contributing condition and classified his death as an accident.
What did the medical examiner determine?
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner listed the cause of death as “sequelae of blunt traumatic injuries.” “Sequelae” means consequences or aftereffects. The department’s release does not identify a specific injury or explain the mechanics of the fall.
Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease was listed as a contributing condition, not as the primary cause. The department stated: “The manner of death is accident.”
Simmons, born Milton Teagle Simmons, was 76. The findings and age were reported by the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner.

What happened before he was found?
According to the medical examiner’s August 22, 2024, release, a fall was reported on July 11. Simmons spent the following day in bed and was found unresponsive on his bedroom floor on the morning of July 13. His death was determined at 9:45 a.m.
An examination took place at the department’s Forensic Science Center on July 14. The department certified and announced the cause and manner on August 22.

In July, while the investigation was pending, the cause had not yet been determined. The Los Angeles Times reported on July 16, 2024, that the cause was deferred. That was a preliminary status; the medical examiner later issued the final determination in August.
The Los Angeles Times reported the final finding in August, but the medical examiner’s release is the primary source for the official cause, contributing condition, manner, and timeline.
