The former Home Improvement actor shared that suggestion in an August 8, 2025, Woman’s World interview about his partnership with DoMyOwn. It is a useful starting point, not a diagnosis or a substitute for lawn-care expertise.
What Richard Karn recommends for lawn care
Karn says homeowners should first find out what kind of grass they have. Different grasses grow in different regions, and recognizing the variety can help make sense of why parts of a lawn look or grow differently.
“Because the company specializes in DIY lawn care I suggest finding out what kind of grass you have because not everyone knows that answer.”
He adds that knowing the grass type can help explain brown spots or differences in growth. That is a first step in understanding a lawn, not a promise that grass identification alone will reveal the cause of a problem.

Why Karn became associated with lawn care
DoMyOwn approached Karn because audiences knew him as Al Borland, the practical, tool-savvy co-host he played on Home Improvement. In the interview, Karn describes the company as a place homeowners can turn with questions about lawns and outdoor home care.

He also connects his interest in yards to growing up in Seattle and wondering what could grow at home. He says he can handle some household repairs while recognizing that other jobs are beyond his abilities. Those are personal reflections from an interview; they do not establish professional lawn-care or horticultural credentials.
How the DoMyOwn partnership changed
DoMyOwn’s 2025 announcement named Karn its Chief Solutions Officer and described a lawn-care focus, including weeds, fertilizer, turf pests and lawn disease. The company says it provides products, how-to information and customer support, with recommendations tailored to location, grass type and lawn size. In a March 31, 2026, announcement, DoMyOwn said Karn returned for a second year and that the partnership’s emphasis had shifted from DIY lawn care toward pest control, including ants, mosquitoes, roaches, termites and seasonal pests. That update matters: his 2025 lawn-care comments remain the relevant advice in the interview, but lawn care was not presented as the partnership’s sole or continuing focus in 2026.

Grass type and location are sensible context when you are trying to understand lawn differences, but Karn’s comments do not specify a fertilizer, pesticide, treatment rate or remedy for a particular yard. DoMyOwn’s 2025 announcement names fertilizer selection as one homeowner concern, but it does not establish which product or application is right for an individual lawn.

DoMyOwn reported that nearly 76% of homeowners were unsure what kind of grass they had. The company attributed that figure to third-party research but did not identify the research organization, fieldwork year or methodology in its announcement, so it should be read as a company-reported figure rather than an independently verified finding.
