At a May 25, 2024 event at The Cabot in Beverly, Massachusetts, Richard Dreyfuss took part in a question-and-answer session before a screening of Jaws. Attendees and contemporaneous news reports said the conversation moved into remarks about women in film, the #MeToo movement, transgender children, LGBTQ+ rights and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ inclusion standards. Some audience members heckled Dreyfuss or left before the film was shown.
The Cabot issued a statement two days later saying that it shared serious concerns about the event, regretted the distress caused to patrons and accepted responsibility for failing to anticipate the direction of the discussion. However, no complete official transcript of the Q&A or detailed public rebuttal from Dreyfuss addressing the specific allegations has been located.
What happened at the Richard Dreyfuss and Jaws event?
The event was advertised as “An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss + Jaws Screening”. It took place on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at The Cabot, a theater in Beverly, Massachusetts. Dreyfuss, who played marine biologist Matt Hooper in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film, was scheduled to discuss his career and participate in a live conversation before the screening.
According to attendees and multiple news reports, the Q&A did not remain focused on Dreyfuss’s Hollywood career or the film. Reports said that the discussion included criticism of women’s roles in film and the #MeToo movement, opposition to or criticism of the Academy’s inclusion standards, and comments concerning transgender youth and LGBTQ+ people.

Those reports should be treated as accounts of the event rather than as a definitive transcript. The full conversation was not released as an official, independently verifiable transcript, and quotations circulating online were not all confirmed by a single authoritative record.
What remarks were reported?
Contemporaneous accounts described the remarks in several overlapping subject areas:
- Women and the film industry: Attendees and reporters said Dreyfuss made comments that they viewed as dismissive or offensive toward women’s roles and participation in film.
- The #MeToo movement: Reports connected parts of the discussion to Dreyfuss’s criticism of the movement and to debates about accountability in Hollywood.
- Transgender children and LGBTQ+ rights: News outlets and audience members said the conversation included comments about transgender young people and LGBTQ+ issues. Some attendees characterized the remarks as transphobic or homophobic.
- Academy inclusion standards: Reports said Dreyfuss criticized the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ eligibility standards concerning diversity and inclusion.
The Boston Globe reported one remark attributed to Dreyfuss involving a child saying she was “an octopus.” Other outlets described additional comments attributed to people who attended. Because there is no complete official transcript, it is more accurate to say that attendees and news organizations reported these remarks than to present every widely circulated quotation as settled fact.
Some coverage also noted that Dreyfuss entered the stage wearing a dress while Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” played. Video reported by CBS and Variety documents that entrance, but it does not independently establish what was said during the subsequent discussion.

A Boston Globe report quoted The Cabot’s executive director as saying that more than 100 people walked out, while other attendee accounts gave lower estimates. The precise number has not been independently established.
The safest conclusion is that some attendees left and others heckled Dreyfuss; the exact scale of the walkout remains disputed.
The Cabot apologized and disavowed the remarks
On May 27, 2024, The Cabot published a statement addressing the event. The venue said it was aware of and shared serious concerns raised after the appearance. It stated that the views expressed by Dreyfuss did not reflect The Cabot’s values of inclusivity and respect, apologized for the distress caused to patrons and accepted responsibility for failing to anticipate the direction of the conversation.
The theater also said that an event intended to celebrate an iconic film had instead become a platform for political views. This was the clearest institutional response identified in reporting about the incident.
The statement confirmed the venue’s regret and its disavowal of the views expressed during the event. It did not, by itself, verify every specific quotation or allegation attributed to Dreyfuss by attendees and news reports.

Why the Academy’s inclusion standards came up
The discussion at The Cabot was reported against the background of Dreyfuss’s earlier public criticism of the Academy’s diversity and inclusion eligibility standards.
During a 2023 appearance on PBS’s Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, Dreyfuss criticized the standards and argued that artistic work should not be required to conform to what he described as contemporary ideas of morality. That earlier appearance helps explain why reports about the 2024 event linked his comments to the Academy’s rules.
It does not establish that every remark reported from The Cabot was part of a preplanned position, nor does it prove the exact wording of the later conversation.

The connection to Jaws
The controversy occurred at a film event built around Jaws, Spielberg’s 1975 adaptation of Peter Benchley’s novel. Dreyfuss played Matt Hooper, a marine biologist who helps investigate the shark attacks alongside Roy Scheider’s police chief Martin Brody.
The Cabot is in Beverly, Massachusetts, roughly 200 kilometers north of Martha’s Vineyard, where much of Jaws was filmed. That geographic and cinematic connection explains the event’s appeal, but it is separate from the disputed content of the Q&A.

Was Dreyfuss formally banned or disciplined?
The available research does not establish that Dreyfuss was formally censured, expelled from an organization, sued, or banned across the film industry because of the Cabot appearance. Those claims should not be inferred from the audience reaction or The Cabot’s statement.
Later coverage continued to discuss Dreyfuss’s connection to Jaws and his public appearances. A 2026 report said he canceled a later Jaws-related appearance for reasons he did not publicly explain, but there is no evidence in the available reporting that connected that cancellation to the May 2024 controversy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did Richard Dreyfuss respond?
No reliable source identified in this research pass documented a direct, detailed public rebuttal from Dreyfuss addressing the specific allegations about the May 25 Q&A. As a result, the most responsible account separates what is directly confirmed—the date, venue, format, audience disruption and Cabot statement—from claims about the precise language used during the conversation.
The incident is therefore best described as a controversial Jaws event at which attendees and news outlets reported offensive remarks, followed by a public statement from the venue rejecting the views expressed. Without a complete recording or transcript, stronger claims about every detail would go beyond the available evidence.

The Bottom Line
Richard Dreyfuss’s May 25, 2024 appearance at The Cabot was intended to pair a career conversation with a screening of Jaws. Attendees and news organizations reported that the Q&A instead included controversial comments about gender, sexuality, the #MeToo movement and Academy inclusion standards. Some audience members heckled him or left, and The Cabot later apologized and disavowed the views expressed. Because no complete official transcript has been established, the details should remain attributed rather than presented as an independently verified verbatim record.
