The watch in Time+Tide’s 2016 “WATCHSPOTTING” feature is a Hublot Big Bang Red Magic Carbon, worn by Jimmy Niggles—the persona of Australian campaigner Scott Maggs. The article shows Maggs with Sir Richard Branson, but it does not identify the watch as Branson’s. Branson’s role was to support Beard Season; Hublot presented the watch to Maggs.
What watch was Jimmy Niggles wearing?
Time+Tide identifies Maggs’s watch as a Hublot Big Bang Red Magic Carbon in its feature published on 28 August 2016. The article does not provide an exact reference number, price, technical specifications, or current availability, so the identification should not be taken as a complete model specification or buying guide. Read the Time+Tide feature.
Who is Jimmy Niggles, and what was the Million Dollar Beard?
Jimmy Niggles is the beard-growing persona Scott Maggs used for Beard Season, a campaign that encouraged people to talk about skin checks. In the Time+Tide interview, Maggs said the idea grew from the death of his friend Wes, who died from melanoma at 26. Maggs described the beard as a conversation starter: “We’d grow beards, and every time anyone asked us about them, we’d tell them about Wes, and challenge them to get a skin check.”
The “million dollar” label referred to Maggs’s proposed fundraising idea: he said the beard might be sold for $1 million, with the money intended to support free skin-check sessions and build the campaign. That was a goal he described in the 2016 interview, not an independently assessed valuation or proof the target had already been raised at that time.

What was Richard Branson’s connection?
Maggs told Time+Tide that he met Branson in Sydney and later heard from Branson’s office that he supported Beard Season. Maggs said Branson wrote about the campaign and became an ambassador. The watch story pairs the two men, but its account names Maggs as the watch’s wearer and recipient—not Branson.
Maggs also estimated in that 2016 interview that Branson’s Virgin post reached 30 million people. That figure is Maggs’s estimate, not an independently verified audience metric.

How did Hublot give Maggs the watch?
According to Maggs’s account in the feature, he was looking for a partner for a 2015 London exhibition of portraits of bearded people. His proposal reached Jean-Claude Biver, and Hublot invited him to its Nyon headquarters and presented him with the Big Bang Red Magic Carbon. The feature does not establish a reference number or explain whether the watch was a loan, purchase, or part of a broader sponsorship arrangement.

A later profile by The PR Hub says the Million Dollar Beard Ball ultimately reached its million-dollar fundraising target. That is a subsequent development, separate from the forward-looking proposal Maggs described in the 2016 Time+Tide interview. The PR Hub profile also describes Maggs as the creator of the Jimmy Niggles persona and links the later work to Skin Check Champions. Read The PR Hub profile.
