On the Real Housewives of Orange County season 18 finale, a reported engagement-party scene showed bookmaker Mathew Bowyer jokingly call Ryan Boyajian his “money launderer,” and Boyajian laughing. That moment was a joke on camera, not evidence that Boyajian committed a crime. Federal records establish guilty pleas and sentences for Bowyer and Ippei Mizuhara; the records reviewed do not establish Boyajian’s guilt.
What happened in the RHOC finale?
A November 1, 2024 entertainment report described footage from Jennifer Pedranti and Boyajian’s engagement party in the October 31 season 18 finale. In the reported scene, Bowyer made the “money launderer” joke and Boyajian laughed. The episode also turned to news linking Boyajian to the gambling investigation, including cast reactions and a conversation between Pedranti and Boyajian. This is reported episode context, not a transcript independently verified against the episode. Entertainment report on the finale.
Bravo later presented a clip in which Pedranti addressed why her friend Matthew had joked that Boyajian was a money launderer. The clip confirms the subject was discussed on Watch What Happens Live; it does not establish facts about the criminal case. Bravo’s clip.
Why was Ryan Boyajian called a money launderer?
The reported scene supplies the immediate answer: Bowyer jokingly used that label for Boyajian at the engagement party, and Boyajian laughed. The entertainment report and Bravo clip provide context for the remark, but the joke itself should not be treated as an accusation proven in court. A reaction shot or cast discussion is not a legal finding.

What did the federal case establish?
Mathew Bowyer’s guilty plea and sentence
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said Bowyer pleaded guilty in August 2024 to operating an unlawful gambling business, money laundering, and subscribing to a false tax return. The DOJ described his illegal bookmaking operation as running for at least five years, until October 2023, and having more than 700 bettors at times. On August 29, 2025, Bowyer was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison and ordered to pay $1,613,280 in restitution. U.S. Department of Justice: Bowyer sentencing.
Ippei Mizuhara’s guilty plea and sentence
The DOJ described Mizuhara as a Bowyer client. It said Mizuhara admitted stealing nearly $17 million from Shohei Ohtani to pay gambling debts and failing to pay tax on gambling income. Mizuhara pleaded guilty to bank fraud and subscribing to a false tax return. On February 6, 2025, he was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison. U.S. Department of Justice: Mizuhara sentencing.

What is established about Boyajian’s legal status?
The DOJ records cited here establish convictions and sentences for Bowyer and Mizuhara; they do not establish that Boyajian was guilty of a crime. The November 2024 secondary report says Boyajian was not indicted and was granted immunity, but the primary sources reviewed do not verify the nature or scope of any immunity. That reported account should not be expanded into a claim about what Boyajian agreed to do or what protection he may have received.

How to distinguish the joke from the case record
- On-camera remark: the reported engagement-party joke is entertainment footage, not a court finding.
- Entertainment coverage: the November 2024 report and Bravo clip describe the show’s discussion; neither is a substitute for legal records.
- Federal case outcomes: DOJ releases describe the guilty pleas and sentences of Bowyer and Mizuhara. Those outcomes should not be attributed to Boyajian.
