Rey Mysterio did wrestle without his mask after losing it in WCW, but that footage shows a historical wrestling appearance—not a candid photo of him today. In a 2022 interview, Mysterio said he returned to WWE masked and does not really take public photos without it. A WWE gallery titled “Rey Mysterio like you’ve never seen him before” is not, by its accessible page text, verified evidence of an unmasked portrait.
What “Rey Mysterio without his mask” can mean
There are two different things readers may be looking for: a historical image of Mysterio wrestling unmasked, or an ordinary personal photograph of him without the mask. The first is tied to his WCW career after he lost the mask. The second is not established by the WWE gallery discussed below, and Mysterio said he generally does not take public photos without it.
WWE describes the mask as part of lucha libre custom and says Mysterio’s ring name pays tribute to his uncle. That context matters: the mask is part of his wrestling identity, not merely a costume detail. WWE’s Rey Mysterio profile provides the company’s career and biography overview.
His account of losing the mask in WCW
In an interview published by TV Insider on August 27, 2022, Mysterio described the WCW mask loss as difficult at the time. Looking back, he also framed it as a turning point: “It was like a new beginning for Rey Mysterio as an unmasked luchador.”

That statement refers to his wrestling persona and career after the WCW unmasking. It should not be read as evidence of a private, everyday unmasked photo. If an image is presented as a WCW-era unmasked appearance, it should be identified as wrestling footage or an event image and dated and attributed to its original publisher.
What WWE’s photo gallery does—and does not—confirm
WWE has a gallery titled “Rey Mysterio like you’ve never seen him before.” The page title may sound like a promise of an unmasked image, but the accessible page text does not establish that any displayed image shows Mysterio without his mask. A suggestive title alone is not image verification.

For any photo claimed to show Mysterio unmasked, check the original publisher’s caption and date, the event or setting, and whether it is a storyline or historical wrestling appearance rather than a personal portrait. A repost without that provenance cannot establish when or where an image was made, or whether it has been described accurately.
Storyline unmaskings are not candid photos
WWE’s August 19, 2019 coverage describes a planned ceremonial self-unmasking during a retirement angle, stopped by his son Dominick. WWE also presents other mask removals as storyline events. These scenes are part of televised wrestling narratives; they should be labeled as such rather than presented as ordinary personal photography.

WWE has announced Rey Mysterio: Behind the Mask, a book about his life and career. The announcement confirms the book, but does not say that it contains unmasked photographs; it should not be treated as a verified source for them. Read WWE’s book announcement.
