Hawn and Russell first crossed paths while working on the 1966 musical comedy The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. Hawn later recalled meeting him on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2012: “I was 21 and he was 16 and I thought he was adorable but he was much too young.” The age difference made an impression; it did not become a romance then. Their 1983 reunion brought Russell’s memorable line
They reconnected in 1983 while working on Swing Shift. Russell told Conan O’Brien in 2017 that he was badly hungover before seeing Hawn again. In his recollection, he greeted her with, “Man, you got a great figure.” Vogue gives Hawn’s reply as, “Why, thank you.” This is a story Russell recounted years afterward, not a contemporaneous transcript of the exchange.
Vogue’s timeline says the two began appearing publicly as a couple in 1984. Their first meeting and the start of their romance are therefore separate milestones: 1966 and 1983, respectively.

Their first date took an unexpected turn
Russell described the date during an appearance on Harry in 2017. Because they were preparing for a dancing scene, he asked Hawn to go dancing. They went to the Playboy Club, then to a house Hawn was renovating. Russell said they had to break in, police interrupted them, and they eventually went to a hotel. Looking back, he said, “That was our first date. It was a lot of fun.” ABC News published his account on April 21, 2017.
They built a blended family
Hawn and Russell welcomed their son Wyatt in 1986. Hawn’s children, Kate and Oliver, and Russell’s son, Boston, were also part of the blended family described in coverage of the couple. Vogue reported that they had eight grandchildren by November 2024; that figure is a dated biographical count, not a current total guaranteed to remain unchanged.

Russell has noted that both had been married before and has described their family life as fulfilling.
