Zach Bryan’s September 27, 2025, concert at Michigan Stadium made history as the first concert there headlined by an artist—and tested how a songwriter’s intimate, lyric-led music could fill a stadium. John Mayer’s special-guest set and two collaborations gave the night a distinct second voice, while Bryan’s 26-song performance moved between quiet reflection and mass singalong.
What made the Big House show historic?
The University of Michigan announced the concert as the first time an artist would headline a show at Michigan Stadium, known as “The Big House.” AEG later described Bryan as the first artist to play the venue. The distinction matters: the university’s announcement specifically framed the milestone around a headlined concert. The September 27 bill included special guest John Mayer, as well as Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen, and Joshua Slone. The University of Michigan Athletics announcement listed the stadium’s football capacity as 107,601; that is a football figure, not a concert-capacity limit.
In its post-event release, promoter AEG reported an audience of 112,408 and called the concert the largest ticketed show in U.S. history. MusicRow repeated the figure and record characterization on September 29. Timing explains why another number appears in early coverage: Rolling Stone’s review, published September 29, said final attendance was not yet available and reported that more than 112,000 tickets had been sold. The later precise count should therefore be attributed to AEG, rather than retroactively assigned to Rolling Stone. AEG also reported $5 million in event merchandise sales; both figures are promoter-reported. AEG’s post-event release and MusicRow’s September 29 report document the claims.
Could Bryan’s songs hold a stadium?
That was the night’s central musical challenge. Bryan’s songs often depend on direct, conversational lyrics and emotional detail; at Michigan Stadium, those qualities had to cross an enormous crowd without being lost in scale. Rolling Stone’s Joel Hoard describes a four-pointed stage at midfield, with four screens above it so the performance could be seen around the stadium. A University of Michigan student reviewer, Cici Dedyo of MUSIC Matters, describes it as a 360-degree stage and recalls the audience joining in immediately on “Overtime.” Together, those details suggest a production built not simply to enlarge Bryan, but to place him amid the audience.

Hoard’s account captures the set’s contrasting register: reflective acoustic songs such as “God Speed” and “28” alongside country-rock anthems including “Quittin’ Time” and “Revival.” The intimate material kept the songwriter at the center; the bigger songs gave the audience room to answer back. During “Dawns,” Hoard reports Bryan telling the crowd, “This might be the craziest thing I’ve ever done.” Later, Hoard records him saying, “Thank you so much for the best night of my life.” These remarks, as reported in Rolling Stone, underline the scale of the occasion without settling whether every quiet moment could feel as close in a stadium as it would in a smaller room. Joel Hoard’s Rolling Stone review provides the performance details and reported remarks.
What did John Mayer add?
Mayer’s role was guest rather than co-headliner: he played an opening set, then returned for two collaborations. Dedyo describes his set as guitar-focused, a different musical frame before Bryan’s larger headlining production. The guest appearances made that contrast part of the concert rather than a separate prelude. Bryan and Mayer performed “Friend of the Devil” and “Better Days” together, according to MusicRow; Dedyo singles out Mayer’s return for “Better Days.” Rolling Stone reports Mayer describing the midfield production as an “omnidirectional stage.”

MusicRow reports the appearances and the set’s major milestones; Dedyo offers the student publication’s first-person perspective on the evening. MUSIC Matters’ account by Cici Dedyo describes the crowd and guest moments.
What was the setlist?
MusicRow reports a 26-song set, opening with “Overtime” and ending with a nearly 30-minute “Revival” encore. The set moved from early singalong energy through quieter songs, collaborations and a lengthy finale. A user-contributed Setlist.fm entry offers a fuller sequence, but it is not an official setlist.

Before Bryan came on, Hoard reports, the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” played as the band walked onto the field, and Bryan wore a customized maize-and-blue number-two jersey—a nod to the venue’s football culture. The staging, screens and crowd-wide perspective made the event feel built for the place. Yet the performance’s strongest tension was musical: songs rooted in personal feeling became collective when thousands sang along, while the acoustic passages asked a stadium audience to listen rather than simply celebrate.

That tension is what gives the concert its character as more than a record-setting booking. Mayer’s guitar-led opening and his later returns broadened the evening’s palette; Bryan’s set remained the main event, shifting between inward songs and communal anthems. The Big House did not erase the songs’ intimacy so much as put it under unusual pressure—and make the audience’s participation part of the answer.
