Reneé Rapp’s BITE ME turns heartbreak, anger and hard-won self-possession into sharp, funny pop. Its brash title and punchlines don’t erase the hurt underneath; they make room for both. The result is a compact second album whose candor feels most compelling when confidence and vulnerability share the same song.
What is BITE ME about?
Rapp has described the album as a time capsule of the previous two years, a period shaped by changes in her personal life and pressure around her career. The songs move among flirtation, intimacy, heartbreak and betrayal rather than presenting one continuous story. Beginning and ending relationships—including friendships—can both unsettle the people involved, and the record draws on that instability.
That emotional range is clearest in the contrast between “Leave Me Alone” and “That’s So Funny.” The first pushes back with a bracing, self-protective energy; the second faces the pain of a relationship’s end. Rapp has said “That’s So Funny” recounts the end of a deeply affecting but toxic friendship. She has also spoken about relying on friends during a difficult relationship and breakup, and about setting firmer boundaries while asking what she wanted from her personal life.
How does the album balance its attitude with its hurt?
The album’s central tension is its appeal. Rapp’s voice can sound gleefully blunt, but the bravado does not make the underlying feelings seem trivial. Instead, its humor and defiance give her a way to approach experiences that were painful and confusing. Rapp told the Associated Press, “I write lyrics in the way that I talk,” a directness that helps the songs feel conversational rather than carefully polished into distance.

She has named Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill as an influence, drawn to its honesty and anger, and cited Joan Jett’s sharp, direct attitude. Those references help explain the album’s unapologetic posture, though BITE ME is Rapp’s own voice: funny, forceful and willing to let hurt remain visible.
Does it build on Snow Angel?
Yes, more in confidence and cohesion than in a rejection of vulnerability. GRAMMY.com describes BITE ME as building on the raw honesty of Snow Angel, Rapp’s 2023 debut. Rapp put the distinction succinctly: “Snow Angel was a test run, and BITE ME is a body of work.” The second album’s sharper sense of attitude gives its different emotional situations a recognizable shared voice.

Should listeners treat the songs as a diary?
The album draws on Rapp’s life, but it is not an invitation to assign every lyric to a named person. She has said that different people from old and new relationships and friendships inform the songs, and cautioned Vogue readers: “At the same time, people make assumptions about who the songs are about, and often they’re just wrong.” The more grounded reading is to hear the songs as emotionally specific without claiming certainty about their subjects.

- Length: 12 songs, 33 minutes
BITE ME is worth listening to if you want pop that can be cutting and wounded at once. Its strongest idea is not that Rapp has moved past hurt, but that she can meet it with humor, anger and a voice that refuses to soften itself for approval. For listeners drawn to the raw honesty of Snow Angel, this is a more assured expression of the same willingness to be emotionally exposed.
Rapp told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, “I set out to make music I would want to listen to, and I set out to not compromise a single thing about my personality and be unwaveringly loud about it—and I did that.” The album’s bluntness makes that intention audible.
