Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: For a low-cost Indian VPS that only needs to relay an already encoded feed, datarhei Restreamer is the more direct fit: it is a self-hosted streaming server with an official Docker deployment. Use OBS when you need scenes, overlays, source mixing, or encoding control—but do not assume an inexpensive headless Linux VPS meets OBS’s graphics and display requirements. The two can also be combined. None of the available sources establishes that either setup will run uninterrupted for 24/7 on a particular VPS; test the full workload and check the provider’s terms before relying on it.
What Restreamer and OBS do
OBS Studio produces and encodes a stream
OBS is the production application in this comparison. Choose it when you need to compose scenes, layer graphics or overlays, mix sources, or control encoding. On Linux and Unix, OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X11 or Wayland among its requirements. A VPS advertised with a certain number of CPU cores and amount of RAM may still be a poor fit if its virtual graphics and display arrangement cannot meet those requirements. Verify the actual instance and encoder path rather than assuming a headless server will work.
datarhei Restreamer receives and forwards a stream
Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming server, not a direct substitute for OBS’s scene-building workflow. Its project documents publishing to YouTube and receiving video from OBS. For a server whose job is to accept an already encoded input and forward it, the official Docker deployment is the clearer starting point. datarhei recommends its official Docker images to reduce environment and dependency problems; see its current documentation for deployment guidance.
They can be used together
OBS can create the production feed while Restreamer handles server-side ingest or forwarding. The available OBS integration guide describes that architecture, but it covers Restreamer 0.6.x and is marked deprecated. Treat it as historical context, not current setup instructions; confirm the procedure against current Restreamer documentation. The old guide’s example of 2,500–3,000 Kbps for Full HD is not a current universal recommendation.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which should you choose for this VPS?
| Need | Better starting point | Why and what to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Forward an existing, encoded feed to YouTube | Restreamer | Its documented Docker deployment suits a self-hosted ingest and forwarding role. You still need to validate sustained CPU, memory, network, and reconnect behavior on your VPS. |
| Build scenes, add overlays, mix sources, or control encoding | OBS | Those are production tasks. On Linux, verify the instance’s OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X11 or Wayland setup, then test encoding at the intended resolution and frame rate. |
| Produce with OBS and forward from a server | OBS plus Restreamer | The roles can complement one another, but the surfaced Restreamer OBS guide is deprecated. Confirm the current ingest and forwarding configuration before deployment. |
These are role-based recommendations, not results from a 24/7 test. No cited source establishes a performance benchmark or uninterrupted uptime for OBS or Restreamer on a low-cost Indian VPS.
Set YouTube-compatible encoder settings
Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance as the compatibility baseline for the chosen resolution and frame rate. It specifies RTMP or RTMPS, lists H.264 as a supported video codec, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. For RTMP or RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3.

Check VPS cost and transfer before choosing a plan
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. Estimate monthly outbound transfer from the selected bitrate and planned operating hours, then compare it with the allowance and overage terms for the specific provider, plan, and region. Protocol overhead and bitrate peaks add to a simple bitrate estimate. A headline network speed or a large monthly allowance does not establish that a VPS can sustain a stable stream around the clock.

Example: an advertised Hostinger India plan
Hostinger’s India VPS page, accessed in 2026, advertised KVM 1 with 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe storage, and 4 TB bandwidth at ₹599/month, with renewal at ₹999/month for a two-year term. These are provider-advertised specifications and prices, not a validated OBS or Restreamer performance result. Prices and plan terms can change; check the current offer and renewal terms before buying.
Check regional transfer terms
Hostinger describes its VPS as self-managed and provides root access. AWS Lightsail’s pricing page says Mumbai-region bundles include half the transfer allowance shown in its general bundle tables. For any provider, compare the selected region’s included outbound transfer, overage rules, renewal price, and acceptable-use terms—not only the CPU, RAM, promotion, or advertised network speed.

Run a representative 24/7 soak test
Before treating the setup as dependable, test it on the actual VPS with the same input, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate planned for production. No cited source verifies uninterrupted 24/7 operation for these options or for a named low-cost Indian VPS.
- Confirm permission: Read the provider’s current acceptable-use terms and confirm that continuous outbound RTMP/RTMPS streaming is permitted.
- Configure the real workload: Use the intended source, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and YouTube destination rather than a lighter test stream.
- Monitor during an extended run: Watch CPU and memory pressure, dropped frames, reconnects, and outbound network transfer. Record whether a disconnect recovers and how long recovery takes.
- Check the YouTube side: Confirm the live event receives the stream and inspect YouTube’s stream health indications for encoder or connection warnings.
- Review capacity and recovery: Compare actual transfer against the plan allowance, and test restart and reconnect behavior before relying on the workflow.
A successful short test is useful but is not proof of uninterrupted service over a day or month. Repeat after material changes to the VPS, software, input, or encoder settings.

Common problems and what to check
- OBS does not start or has no usable display on the VPS: Check the Linux graphics and display arrangement against OBS’s OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland requirements. Reassess whether OBS belongs on that VPS or whether production should happen elsewhere.
- Frames drop or the stream becomes unstable under load: Compare CPU and memory pressure with the actual resolution, frame rate, and encoding workload. The plan’s advertised resources alone do not establish sufficient capacity.
- YouTube reports an encoder or stream configuration warning: Check protocol, H.264 video, CBR, keyframe interval, audio codec, and resolution-specific bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- The stream disconnects or fails to resume: Observe reconnect behavior during the soak test and inspect both server logs and YouTube stream health. Do not assume recovery behavior without testing the deployed configuration.
- Transfer allowance is used faster than expected: Recalculate from actual bitrate and operating hours, including overhead and peaks, and check the selected region’s allowance and overage terms.
- The service runs but the provider objects to the traffic: Recheck the provider’s current acceptable-use policy; technical capability is not permission for continuous streaming.
Or let it run in the cloud
