Restream Pre-Recorded Stream Out of Sync on YouTube: How to Fix It

Compare the original file with YouTube’s output to locate a sync problem, then check Restream’s upload requirements, run a private test, and use diagnostics for the workflow you actually use.

First find where the audio and video stop matching: compare the original file with the YouTube output, then check the event and delivery path. If the source file is already out of sync, fix or re-encode it before uploading again. If it is synchronized locally but not on YouTube, run a private test, review stream-health diagnostics, and contact Restream support if the problem persists. Restream documents audio-offset controls for encoder workflows; its published guidance does not confirm an equivalent control for prerecorded Upload & Stream events.

Find where the sync problem begins

Use a recognizable moment with both sound and movement, such as a spoken word paired with a visible mouth movement or an impact sound paired with the impact. Compare the same moment at normal playback speed in the original file and in YouTube’s output. This comparison is a practical way to isolate the stage where the mismatch first appears; Restream’s local-recording comparison guidance is written for encoder streams, not specifically for prerecorded uploads.

  1. Play the original file locally. Note whether the sound leads or trails the picture, and whether the offset remains steady or grows over time.
  2. Compare that moment with YouTube. If the original is synchronized but the YouTube output is not, the defect appears later in the workflow.
  3. If available, compare the live preview and saved replay. This can help distinguish a problem in the delivered stream from one that appears in playback, but those comparisons may not be available in every account or event.

Record your observations: the file or clip tested, the event time, whether the original is synchronized, when the mismatch starts, and whether it gets worse. That makes a support request more actionable.

Check the prerecorded file before uploading again

Restream’s upload requirements, dated April 22, 2026, list these mandatory specifications for prerecorded videos:

  • Container: MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV.

Restream recommends Full HD 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a bitrate suited to the destination platform, and 15–20 seconds of extra material at both the beginning and end. The added lead-in and tail are intended to reduce the chance that a destination platform cuts off important content while processing the incoming stream; they are not a direct audio-sync correction. A mismatch with a recommendation does not by itself prove what caused an offset.

If the original file is out of sync, correct the source in a video editor or re-encode it, then check the result locally before scheduling it again. If converting the file, preserve synchronization and confirm that the exported version meets the upload requirements.

Restream describes Upload & Stream as able to loop a scheduled video up to 10 times. Looping is not a sync fix, but it may help reproduce a problem that recurs during a longer event.

Use the right fix for the workflow

If you scheduled the video with Upload & Stream

Restream’s documented audio-offset instructions do not establish that a prerecorded Upload & Stream event has an offset control. Do not assume that an encoder mixer adjustment is available in this workflow. Verify the source file, run a private test, and inspect YouTube diagnostics before changing the event or escalating the issue.

If an external encoder is sending the stream

Restream’s audio-sync article, dated July 15, 2024, applies to encoder workflows. It advises checking that the intended audio and video devices are selected and making a local recording. If that local recording is out of sync, adjust the audio sync offset in the encoder’s mixer or advanced audio settings. Restream suggests trying positive and negative values such as 200 and -200, then tuning from the result. These are trial values, not a guaranteed fix, and they are not a setting documented for prerecorded Upload & Stream events.

If the local recording is synchronized but the stream is not, Restream advises investigating network or CPU issues. Its article states: “If sync issues occur in the stream but not in the local recording, check for network or CPU issues.”

Run a private test and inspect YouTube diagnostics

Restream describes testing by recording without going live or sending an unlisted stream to YouTube. YouTube recommends a test that includes audio and movement representative of the real event, along with monitoring stream health. Make the same source-versus-output comparison after each change so you can tell whether it helped.

  • Use a short segment containing representative speech and visible movement.
  • Check whether the original and YouTube output agree at the same recognizable moment.
  • Review any YouTube stream-health messages during the test. YouTube’s Live Streaming API health documentation covers issues including audio codec or sample-rate configuration, multiple audio streams, keyframe frequency, video codec, and insufficient video ingestion.

A health warning may point to a configuration or delivery problem, but it does not on its own prove the cause of a particular audio/video offset.

Do not confuse stream latency with lip-sync offset

Latency is the delay between capture and a viewer receiving the stream. Lip-sync offset is the relative timing difference between sound and picture. A latency setting alone does not diagnose a prerecorded stream’s lip-sync defect.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

YouTube estimates that low-latency streams have less than 10 seconds of delay for most viewers, while ultra-low-latency streams have less than 5 seconds. These are capture-to-viewer latency estimates, not audio/video offset targets. YouTube also notes that lower latency reduces read-ahead buffering and can increase exposure to buffering; network congestion can delay delivery as well.

Audio sample rate: follow the actual stream path

The platform guidance differs by context. Restream’s 2024 encoder troubleshooting article recommends AAC at 44.1 kHz and cautions that 48 kHz may cause sound problems on some devices or services. YouTube’s encoder recommendations list AAC or MP3 and specify 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Use settings appropriate to the workflow and channel layout rather than treating one sample rate as a universal fix for every prerecorded event.

When to contact Restream
