René Angélil, Céline Dion’s husband and longtime manager, died at home in Las Vegas on January 14, 2016, aged 73. Dion’s official announcement said he had died after “a long and courageous battle against cancer.” He died on the eve of his 74th birthday.
Who was René Angélil?
Angélil was Dion’s husband and manager. Her official obituary credited him with helping build her international career and described him as “a gentle man, generous and kind, an unprecedented visionary, a modern Pygmalion, a Renaissance man.”

Dion and Angélil had three children: René-Charles, Nelson, and Eddy. They were named among his survivors in the obituary.
What is known about his cancer?
Dion’s official announcement said Angélil died after a long battle against cancer. Her official biography also says she postponed engagements in 2014 to stay close to her husband while he was fighting cancer. These official sources do not identify the cancer type, so a more specific diagnosis cannot be established from them.

What were the memorial arrangements?
In January 2016, the obituary announced a chapel of rest at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal on January 21, followed by a religious service there on January 22. A Celebration of Life was announced for the Caesars Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas on February 3, 2016. These were arrangements announced at the time, not upcoming events.
The family’s initial announcement requested privacy. The obituary invited contributions to the Azar-Angélil Research Chair for ORL Cancer.
