As the show’s property master, he sourced local details and shaped memorable props; cast members also remembered him for the keepsakes he shared after filming ended.
Who was Phil Shea on The Office?
Philip Daniel Shea, known as Phil, was the beloved property master of The Office, according to Local 44’s memorial notice. The notice says he died on December 7, 2023, aged 62, and describes a property-work career spanning more than three decades.
IMDb’s series credits list Philip D. Shea as property master on 187 episodes of The Office from 2005 to 2013. IMDb is a user-editable credits database, so that figure is best understood as what its listing records, rather than as an independently audited production tally. View the IMDb credits listing.
How Shea made Scranton feel present in the show
Shea sought authentic Scranton details rather than relying only on generic office dressing. WVIA reports that he approached the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce for local props. Mari Potis helped connect the production with businesses and answer questions when scripts called for local references. WVIA’s account of the sourcing effort.

Those connections put recognizable regional details into the fictional world: a University of Scranton flag, a Froggy 101 sticker, Utz and Herr’s chips, and Crystal Soda Water. A 2007 Times Leader archive story adds the community’s side of the effort: local businesses offered shirts, signs, and other items for possible use on the series. Read the Times Leader archive story.
The result was a small but telling kind of documentary texture. These objects suggested a Scranton beyond the office walls—a place with local institutions, businesses, and familiar products—without needing a character to explain the references.

What did Phil Shea do on The Office besides source local items?
Property work also meant helping a scene’s practical details read clearly on screen. In its retrospective on the “Stress Relief” episode, the Los Angeles Times credits the CPR dummies to Shea and says he experimented with the real material of a CPR dummy and found it could work. The account does not describe further technical details, but it captures the problem-solving side of his craft. Read the Los Angeles Times account of the prop.
Why cast members remembered the props after filming
Props could outlast a scene as personal mementos. In a 2025 Los Angeles Times anniversary article, Jenna Fischer recalled keeping a pen from Pam’s desk and a cup that had broken on screen and been glued back together for her. John Krasinski described receiving a box of keepsakes from Shea sometime after production wrapped. It included the teapot associated with Jim and Pam, along with other items from the show.
