Ozzy Osbourne’s reported cars ranged from an everyday Triumph Herald to a Jaguar XJ12, an Audi R8 and two Ferrari 458 Italias. There is no verified complete inventory or objective ranking, but the cars attributed to him tell a story of changing tastes—and one especially memorable motorway drive.
What cars did Ozzy Osbourne drive?
Retrospective accounts describe a varied selection, but they do not establish a complete, independently verified ownership history. Top Gear recounts cars Osbourne discussed in his own recollections, while later coverage adds other vehicles. The list is best read as a collection of reported associations, not a definitive garage inventory.
| Car | What is reported | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Triumph Herald | Top Gear identifies it as Osbourne’s first car. Top Gear | An ordinary starting point, far removed from the exotic cars later linked to him. |
| Range Rover | Top Gear places it after the Herald in its account. Top Gear | A substantial four-wheel-drive contrast to a small first car. |
| Mercedes 280 SE | Top Gear reports Osbourne called it beautiful and recalled it being damaged, burgled and stripped of its wheels after he bought it. Top Gear | Luxury accompanied by a distinctly unlucky ownership tale. |
| Jaguar XJ12 | Osbourne recalled driving one at around 130 mph on an English motorway in the 1970s. Top Gear | A powerful grand tourer at the center of his most vivid car story. |
| Audi R8 | The Guardian’s coverage of Osbourne’s memoir says he bought an R8 despite not having learned to drive. The Guardian | A modern performance car among the later vehicles reported in his history. |
| Ferrari 458 Italia | The Guardian reports that he bought two. Top Gear separately says he crashed a Ferrari 458 in Los Angeles. The Guardian Top Gear | One of the most striking high-performance cars associated with him. |
| Aston Martin Vantage | Included in Moniteur Automobile’s retrospective list; individual model-year and ownership details are not established there. Moniteur Automobile | A British performance-car entry in the broader retrospective account. |
| Rolls-Royce Phantom | Also attributed to Osbourne in Moniteur Automobile’s roundup; specific ownership details are not established. Moniteur Automobile | A luxury-car counterpoint to the sports cars. |
| Volvo 240/245 estate | Moniteur Automobile includes a Volvo 240/245 estate in its retrospective list. Moniteur Automobile | A practical, unflashy outlier among the cars attributed to him. |
From the Triumph Herald to the Mercedes 280 SE
The early cars make the clearest contrast in the story. Top Gear says the Triumph Herald was Osbourne’s first car, followed by a Range Rover and then a Mercedes 280 SE. In the account, the Mercedes was beautiful but brought trouble: Osbourne recalled it being damaged, burgled and left without its wheels soon after he bought it.
These are reported recollections rather than a registry-based record of every car he owned. Still, they give the early part of the lineup a less polished character than the Ferraris and other prestige cars associated with him later.

The Jaguar XJ12 and the motorway at 130 mph
The Jaguar XJ12 offers the most memorable scene. Recalling a drive in England in the 1970s, Osbourne said: “I was going down a motorway in England, it’s very early in the morning, sometime in the 1970s,” Top Gear reported. He recalled travelling at around 130 mph, then thinking about what a tyre blowout at that speed could mean.
The detail that makes the story stick is not a technical specification but the sudden shift from speed to consequence. Top Gear’s separate vehicle feature gives the XJ12 a 5.3-litre V12, but the available account does not verify the year or configuration of Osbourne’s individual car; those details should not be assumed to describe his example.

The Audi R8 and Ferrari 458 Italia
Later accounts put some conspicuous performance cars in Osbourne’s orbit. The Guardian, covering his memoir, reports that he bought an Audi R8 and two Ferrari 458 Italias despite not having learned to drive. Top Gear separately reports that he crashed a Ferrari 458 in Los Angeles and mentions a Ferrari California.
Those accounts do not establish a precise sequence linking each car to a particular event, so they are better treated as separate reports than combined into a detailed ownership timeline. Even with that qualification, the R8 and 458s mark a clear change of scale from the Herald and the Mercedes.

Luxury and practical outliers
Moniteur Automobile’s retrospective list broadens the picture with an Aston Martin Vantage, a Rolls-Royce Phantom and a Volvo 240/245 estate. The trio spans British performance, formal luxury and everyday practicality. The coverage does not supply model years or independently documented ownership records, so the cars are best described as vehicles attributed to him rather than confirmed entries in a complete collection.
The same publication reports that Osbourne needed 19 attempts to obtain his driving licence. That is a figure reported by Moniteur Automobile in 2025, not an official licensing statistic.
