Former ECW commentator Joey Styles later estimated that fans threw “at least 100 chairs” into the ring—a vivid recollection, not a verified count.
How the chair-throwing scene began
WWE’s ECW chronology places the incident at Hardcore Heaven on August 13, 1994. During the brawl between Cactus Jack and Terry Funk and The Public Enemy, Funk asked an audience member for a chair. In Styles’s later account, one fan passed him a chair; when Funk asked for more, the crowd began throwing chairs into the ring from around the venue.
WWE’s retrospective describes the scene as iconic and frames it as one moment in ECW’s shift from Eastern Championship Wrestling toward the more extreme identity that helped the promotion’s outlaw reputation spread. That is WWE’s historical interpretation of the moment, rather than an independently established account of how every fan understood it.
How many chairs were thrown?
Styles recalled: “The next thing you know there had to be at least 100 chairs thrown into the ring.” WWE published that recollection in a 2012 interview. It is the commentator’s estimate; the available account does not establish an independently verified tally.

Why the scene was dangerous
Styles said one chair struck Funk in the back of the head, but had turned so its flat side hit him. That detail conveys the risk of a mass of steel chairs flying into a wrestling ring. The account does not establish that Funk suffered a specific injury, so the moment is best described as a dangerous near miss rather than an injury report.

A memorable moment, not the whole of ECW
The chairs are an unforgettable image, but they do not capture the full range of ECW. In the same retrospective, Styles said the promotion was known for wrestling beyond hardcore spectacle. The chair scene is best understood as one striking episode in a broader wrestling history.
