One played as a lighter comedy-adventure; the other turned the fairy tale into darker action fantasy.
Two films, two very different Snow Whites
| Film | U.S. release | Lead performers | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirror Mirror | March 30, 2012 | Lily Collins as Snow White; Julia Roberts as the Queen | Comedy-adventure |
| Snow White and the Huntsman | June 1, 2012 | Kristen Stewart as Snow White; Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna; Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman | Darker action-adventure fantasy |
The films were separated by about two months, not released together. Their schedules shifted during development, so early announcements sometimes listed dates that were not the final U.S. theatrical releases. Contemporary coverage in the Los Angeles Times contrasted Mirror Mirror as the “bouncier family version” with the darker Huntsman.
How the stories reframed the fairy tale
Mirror Mirror: a comic fight for the kingdom
Directed by Tarsem Singh, Mirror Mirror cast Collins as Snow White and Roberts as the Queen. In Relativity’s synopsis, Snow White joins forces with seven quarrelsome dwarfs to take back her kingdom. The setup made room for comedy and adventure rather than treating the story primarily as a grim battle.
Snow White and the Huntsman: a warrior’s journey
Rupert Sanders’s Snow White and the Huntsman took the darker route. Universal’s synopsis has Queen Ravenna send a Huntsman to pursue Snow White; instead, he trains her to fight. Universal lists the U.S. film rating as PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and brief sensuality.

What the 2012 box office added to the story
In a June 3, 2012 report, the Los Angeles Times put Mirror Mirror’s opening at $18 million and its total at $62 million by the end of its run. The same report gave Snow White and the Huntsman an estimated $56.3 million opening weekend, citing Universal’s estimate; that is an opening-weekend estimate, not a final gross. The article also reported production-budget estimates of about $100 million for Mirror Mirror and about $170 million for The Huntsman. Those were contemporaneous estimates, not audited cost figures.
